I cant just drop the DVD in my drive and capture it straight to my hard drive.
So my first idea is to connect the external DVD player to my AIW 9200 using S-Video and capture using the ATI software.
I'm going to try and capture straight Mpeg2 so that I can then convert and then burn back to DVD.
Yes I know this sounds conveluted, but its my only option considering the scenario I'm working with. My AIW hasnt arrived yet ( its being shipped from a friend), but I wanted to know if anyone had any experience with this or any idea if this will even work properly? Ideally I would like to maintain DVD quality (720x576 or something for NTSC?) so that when I burn the source back to DVD it looks as good as the origional.
Any ideas? Thanks guys!

Look at DVD Backup under "HOW TO"......should find DVDFab HD Decrypter listed under latest video tools.

You are likely to encounter Macrovision.

If spending money is not an issue, you could get something like a Pinnacle Moviebox USB and connect your external DVD player video and audio out or S-Video out to the moviebox and capture the external DVD player output to your hard drive as MPG and then burn it to DVD using Pinnacle or whatever.
You would not get the menus or any other features, just an MPG created while playing the DVD contents, although you could capture a view of the menu and the act of you selecting from it. You would have to play the whole movie, and the capturing would be done in real time. -

As for the capture side, you'll get "near enough", but not as "equal" quality.
Seek out whats known as a video enhancer, which helps to resolve the macrovision issue. -

If your AIW card will do this, then you don't need a moviebox. -

Google PVR 250 and PVR 350. If you are running XP or Win2K, one of these will be the most practical solution producing acceptable results. You will need to make registry edits to lower the line-in volume and increase the sharpness. The standard cards come with everything you need including DVD authoring software, except the necessary cables. Closed captions are lost in the process.
DO NOT BUY A MCE CARD.
