I cant just drop the DVD in my drive and capture it straight to my hard drive.

So my first idea is to connect the external DVD player to my AIW 9200 using S-Video and capture using the ATI software.

I'm going to try and capture straight Mpeg2 so that I can then convert and then burn back to DVD.

Yes I know this sounds conveluted, but its my only option considering the scenario I'm working with. My AIW hasnt arrived yet ( its being shipped from a friend), but I wanted to know if anyone had any experience with this or any idea if this will even work properly? Ideally I would like to maintain DVD quality (720x576 or something for NTSC?) so that when I burn the source back to DVD it looks as good as the origional.

    Any ideas? Thanks guys!

Look at DVD Backup under "HOW TO"......should find DVDFab HD Decrypter listed under latest video tools.

You are likely to encounter Macrovision.

You don't have a DVD drive in the computer?
Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

Yes, I will encounter macrovision, but I found a ATI hack thats supposed to disable or workaround when capturing with an AIW.

I do have a dvd drive in the computer. I frequently copy dvds using DVD Shrink and so forth. Its a long story.... but dvd rom drives are not an option, it must be from a stand alone dvd player.

Wouldnt that be used if I was copying from an DVD-ROm? I'm talking about using a regular DVD PLayer.. like one you would hook your TV up too..Sorry if I was vague

If spending money is not an issue, you could get something like a Pinnacle Moviebox USB and connect your external DVD player video and audio out or S-Video out to the moviebox and capture the external DVD player output to your hard drive as MPG and then burn it to DVD using Pinnacle or whatever.
You would not get the menus or any other features, just an MPG created while playing the DVD contents, although you could capture a view of the menu and the act of you selecting from it. You would have to play the whole movie, and the capturing would be done in real time.

I assumed it would be captured in real time while playing the entire movie. Would the moviebox provide anything that the AIW would not?

What exactly makes this particular disc so unique that it cannot be ripped directly to the pc ?

As for the capture side, you'll get "near enough", but not as "equal" quality.

Seek out whats known as a video enhancer, which helps to resolve the macrovision issue.

I am not familiar with your AIW card, so I don't really know what it can and can't do. The Pinnacle Moviebox USB comes with Pinnacle Studio X.X and it will convert its input to an MPG file and save that MPG file on your hard drive.

I have noticed that I can't get other software to detect the signal coming in on the USB cable from the moviebox, and that I must have Pinnacle Studio running in order to capture the video. However, you don't need Pinnacle to convert the MPG to DVD video. I haven't tried to use anything else to capture, since Pinnacle works fine for this.

If your AIW card will do this, then you don't need a moviebox.

Its a clearplay dvd player. I'm going to use the dvdplayer to play the edited movie while recording it to my HD, which then I can reburn and have an edited copy as well as my origional copy.

I doubt if the driver hack will actually work with the ATI AIW.

Google PVR 250 and PVR 350. If you are running XP or Win2K, one of these will be the most practical solution producing acceptable results. You will need to make registry edits to lower the line-in volume and increase the sharpness. The standard cards come with everything you need including DVD authoring software, except the necessary cables. Closed captions are lost in the process.

DO NOT BUY A MCE CARD.
