No DriveSort doesnt work. Whenever I go to Open>Disk and select a disk it says "Error While Opening Disk. Cause: Cant Open Disk. Access Denied."
For every drive I try to open.

I've read through all of the posts in this thread and have not seen the question I would have addressed. I have 3 HDMI players. Toshiba HD A3,PS3 and Philips 5960. The first 2 players will play 4/3 video as 4/3 thru the HDMI. The 5960 will not. It just plays it in 16/9. So to play a 4/3 vidio I have to switch out of HDMI.

So, does the 5990 and 5992 have the same problem?

The 5990 can be set to pillarbox or stretch 4:3 movies when using HDMI. The option isn't obvious: First, from the Video Setup Page set TV Display to 16:9. This forces the output to be widescreen, 16:9. Then From the Video Setup Page select HDMI Setup. Go to Wide Screen Format. Set it to 4:3 Pillar Box. Now 16:9 DVDs will display at 16:9, 4:3 DVDs will be pillarboxed in the 16:9 display.

Cant recall ever seeing that one. I do know that Drivesort doesn't do NTFS, nor does it permit access to any one logical drive on a single physical drive unless all "logicals" are available, i.e. no one drive is being used.
Failing that, I suspect some security / sharing setting/gremlin.

    Drivesort uninstal, then re-instal?

    Good luck!

I have read, (but have not personally confirmed), that the DVP5590 will play Nero's mpeg4 filetype, created by Nero Digital.

  9. I can't say for sure about the DVP-5992 but the Philip DVP-5990 will play MP4 with Divx/Xvid video and MP3 audio. All the usual limitations apply -- resolution must be 720x576 or less, no 3 warp point GMC, etc. It will not play x.264 encoded video in an MP4 file.

  10. Finally managed to grab one of these players from bustbuy Canada, and have to say -- even though I've had it for only a few days -- I'm pretty bloody happy so far.

One of the things I'd asked around about was "does it have any kind of virtual surround sound?" Never really got an answer but it turns out it does support this. My reason for this is I have a really cheap surround sys' and no seperate A/V receiver/amp. Yeah, I know, spend some bucks. It doesn't have DTS capabilities but has some presets like "stadium, living room, blah blah" and in my small telly-room (12x12) it kicks well enough. Very surprised with this feature.

Just about to load the latest firmware, so it's likely I'll be back saying "oh gawd, what did I do?" :>

Oh yeah, I know it's been said but, I've thrown a bunch of stuff from different media on it, and it hasn't failed as of yet.

Great source of info you folks have here.
    Cheers,

Has anyone tried to connect a 1 TB FAT32 external drive to the USB-port of this player?
If that would work all my media could be stored on it for direct access to the TV.

    Any experience anyone?
Thanks in advance for sharing your views on this!

    Hi All!!
I own the Philips DVD player 5982 and am using an external hard drive filled with movies.
The Philips player plays through my Yamaha home theater system (5.1) the movies are Xvid downloads, the picture quality is very good but I had to crank up the volume to hear the sound and disengage the effects to stop the hissing.
I solved that problem, downloaded " aviaddxsub". what this did, was changed my movies from AVI Xvid to "DivX" boy was I happy.
The sound quality improved to about 80%,picture quality still very good.
Question "Am I able to improve the sound to 5.1 surround sound so I may enjoy my home theater system, as well, not deviating from the DivX format ( which Philips 5982 DVD player needs)
Thank you guys for an amazing informative forum!!

AVIAddXSubs shouldn't actually do anything to the audio and video streams of a video. It's just designed to add an XSUB subtitle stream to a video - and since those are supposed to be in DivX Ultra files, that's why it renames the file from .avi to .divx. (.divx is often just a renamed .avi) If you suspect the player is playing the videos the way you want because the videos have the .divx extension, you could always just rename them to .divx, manually.

Interesting you say that, I will try it this evening.... But with all the frustrations I have been having it dawned on me, why the hell dont I just purchase the new Divx7 which I have done, comes with a convertor and a "Hometheater" set up...Man!! What a difference! Simplicity at it's best.
If you own a DivX player, use the DivX products, go to the DivX web site and see for yourself 8)

Doesn't DivX 7 default to using h264 for video, and the MKV file format - neither of which the 5992 support?

Well, I'm already using DivX 6 Pro along with Xvid.

Divx Converter (the crappy little conversion program that comes with the Divx 7 package) is template based. I don't have it installed right now to check, but if I recall correctly, only one template uses h.264 and MKV, and it's not the default. The Home Theater template still uses MPEG 4 ASP and AVI.

Ah, okay. From discussions here on VH and elsewhere, I'd had the impression they were switching to h264/MKV as the normal base format, with backwards compatibility/support for everything the previous versions supported.

I'm using the Philips 5982 DVD Player with USB and playing my movies from a 160Gb external HDD. From the DVD player I'm plugged into the Yamaha DSP Home Theater system DVD inputs.
OK, picture quality is good and the sound quality is good BUT! only in the 5 Channel selection, should I choose, for instance Sci Fi or Adventure the dialogue is faint. A normal DVD movie with surround sound works beautifully, is there a way of doing this to a Divx movie?

MediaCoder, while no longer open source yet still stored on sourceforge, can help you transcode quickly to mpeg2 or xvid to play it. Find a pre 0.7 version of MediaCoder to be sure not to use the malware versions (adware is malware, and the extensions option in mediacoder contain adware, and 'secretly' bundle with OpenCandy, an attempt to trick users into installing needless toolbars on first install). Aside from of 0.7 issues be assured the latest 0.6 version is great (real OSS, and no malware).

    0.6.2.x builds:

Please list manufacturer, model, and capacity.. the specific model number would be helpful. If you have purchased an inferior (cheap akin to centon) drive this would be called: justice :P

I loaded alternative firmware that overcomes the INANE twelve character limit. File name are finally less uninformative! Additionally the system has frozen about three times in six months as opposed to several times a week with OEM firmware.

  21. Hi there!

I've got a DVP5992/12 and I've just now found out about some firmware mod.

Can I use the 5990 hack on the 5992 or how do I get the long file names?

    bye,
    Michael

  23. I have a DVP5982 and I am using a FAT32 external USB disk drive for avi video. Is anyone doing this with the new DVP5992, the spec say you must use a flash drive.

because it's a USB 1.1 not enough power for external hard drives like the wd passport

    90/92 model both support USB2.0
