The 5990 says it only supports USB devices with 300 folders and 648 files.. anyone know if this is the same? I was planning to use my 1tb Western Digital My Book with it occasionally, but once its full i'm sure there will be much more than 648 files on the drive.. anyone know the folder and file limit for usb devices on this player?

    @Inspex,

Apparently they should have said "300 folders with 648 files EACH":

I've put 700 mp3 files in the root dir and that only shows 648files, but i also put in all of my mp3 folders on the disc and i can see all files in all folders + subfolders.I can also access them so far. All this on a 100gb external 2.5" hdd without power needed extern.

I haven't checked this on my 5990 as I'm only using thumbdrives.

I used this comment/tutorial from bwd777 to prepare the SATA USB drive in an external enclosure: https://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers/philips-dvp-5990/9370?#70038 Works very well. And thanks, bwd777

Picked up the player today. Tried a couple xvid tv shows and a full xvid movie using a sandisk cruzer micro 1gb flash drive, worked flawlessly. Also upgraded to the custom firmware. Very nice player so far. Thanks for the infos.

Plays great using a Transcend 16gb SDHC card with Transcend USB card reader, the package for both pieces costs about USD $38 shipped from Amazon. The only thing I wish there was a firmware mod for is the file/folder organization to display descending alphabetically instead of by modified date. Otherwise its a great player.

    Inspex,

You can use DriveSort or FolderSort for sorting the folders/files. I've used both of them with USB flash drives. They both support FAT32 and long filenames. In DriveSort, there's a tickbox you need to click for long file names; it can give different sorting orders depending on how that's set. It offers a few more options than FolderSort does, but they both work fine in my experience. I haven't used them with an SDHC card, though. They're freeware:

Should I get the DVP5992 or 5990...Reviews on Amazon are better for 5990. Lip Sync Feature in 5992 is pretty nice though especially for someone like me who does a Lot of DVD authoring.

DVP5992 and 5990 are the exact same players. Hardware, software, build. The 5992 is just the silver version.

Just like the 5982 had a silver version called 5982S. Again, the features are the same in both players

I picked up the 5990. The only thing I use it for is USB video playback. I have a different Philips player that I use for dvd playback. I only wish there was a firmware mod or something to get video playback through the USB port on my Philips DVDR3455H DVR / DVD recorder. It can only play music and pictures through USB.

The 5990 is a fantastic player, though. I've been looking for a player with USB video support that can play media from SD cards through a USB card reader for a while now. The 5990 and a USB flash drive, SDHC card with card reader or external hard drive seems to be the perfect DivX / XviD combo. I use mine mostly for television shows. It's nice not having to wait until I have 4gb worth of new shows to burn and watch them.

I bought the New DVP5992 Philips from Cotsco for 50 Bucks it was well worth it...I am loving it so far...It is so much better then playing videos on PS2...

Although I can't get the preference menu for the life of me...Do I need HDMI Cables just to access the preferences?

The reason I am so mad about the preferences is because I want to make my Philips DVP5992 Region Free...I got the hack and code and everything but I cannot get the preference menu...I tried it with a DVD..USB Mode etc..

Nothing works how do I get the DVD Players Preferences to work??

    sandman423,

You don't need HDMI to get the Preference page. I've been able to access it through component cables. Check this link for more info:

Some posts claim that people used WD Passport or other external hard drives linked through the USB port.
Is it any special menu setting for this or just a wish ?
I tried with my WD-Passport-500 and with another external drive (with power supply) and it didn't work. Both were FAT32 formatted and reformatted but were not recognized by the DVD palyer "device not supported".
It works fine with the 8GB Flash drive but not with HDs.

Please reply if you know about any setup that enable HD work.
    Thanks

Thanks for the good intention. The unit is DVP5992
Just reformatted the Passport with Swissknife (tried Paragon before) and still "device not supported"
I guess I have to use only the Flash as HD does not work.

  17. Did you remove all partitions, create a new primary partition, then format it?

of course, that's the first thing I did. One partition formatted fresh FAT32 (4 times) but does not work, just freezes the DVPS5992 and gives the "device not supported" message as soon as I unplug the USB cable

Does the Philips DVP5992/37 play mpeg4 files from the USB port? I just bought mine from Costco and it hasn't had a problem with any other files that I have tried (.avi .wmv .divX) is there a difference in the 5900 and the 5992 this site says the 5900 can play mpeg4 http://www.shopping.com/xPO-Philips-HDMI-DIVX-VIDEO-UPSCALE

  21. What do you mean by "MPEG4" files? Divx and Xvid are MEPG4 (part 2, ASP) codecs. It plays those from the AVI container. It doesn't play .MP4 (container) files, regardless of what's in them. It doesn't play h.264 (MPEG4 part 10, AVC) regardless of container.

Actually, that's not entirely true. Both my 642 and 5990 recognize files with an .mp4 extension. Apparently, though, I'd read on VideoHelp a while back that the 642 would only play .mp4 files if they had a DivX/Xvid video stream and an MP3 audio stream, more or less, so I just tried an experiment - I used AVIdemux to stream copy an Xvid AVI that worked in the 5990, into an MP4, and also renamed another similar AVI to .mp4. The 5990 recognized both files and played them (it also didn't give me the index counter when beginning to play the 'true' MP4, which may or may not be a good thing ).

I'd test the 642, but I didn't feel like burning a disc just to test whether or not it'd play those two files (no CD blanks handy, at least).

I too have a few old clips with an extension mp4 that play in the dvp5990.

Gspot identifies them as mp4, codec mp4v.

KMPlayer shows the clips as video = mpeg-4, bitrate mode = vbr, Qpel = yes, BVOP = yes, Progressive.
The audio is AACLC (AAC Low Complexity), vbr.

I just reconfirmed that both the video and audio play fine in the dvp5990. Because they were encoded with Qpel the dvp-642 wouldn't play them.
There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.

  24. You guys are right -- the 5990 does play Divx/Xvid from an MP4 container. I used AviDemux to remux an xvid/mp3 AVI into MP4 and it player normally. Just for kicks I also muxed into OGM and MKV containers but those didn't show up in the file list.

I have a problem with my Mitsubishi 65" 1080i projection TV reading the DVP 5990.

I have the DVP5990 connected with an HDMI to DVI input into the TV, and also with the component YGB cables.
When I try to play .avi files from my 500 gb WD Hard Drive, some play, yet others automatically switch my TV to Progressive Scan and the image goes crazy. This also happened with the HDMI/DVI to my last Panasonic 47" Projection TV, but when I ran it into the YGB Components it played everything fine. (although in 480 I suspect)

In the system settings I am unable to turn "Progressive" to off as it is faded and I can not highlight it.
I've selected 1080i under HDMI settings, and I have run out of ideas how to fix this.

I even dont mind if it plays it in 480, just as long as it plays it.

THANK YOU for any possible help!

What happens if you select 720p for the HDMI output?

bryanbahr, You and I probably ran into the same problem. See

    https://forum.videohelp.com/topic363114.html#1935670

Are you using HDMI and YGB simultaneously? My guess is, if you do not connect with YGB you might experience the same symptoms as I did - your screen would go blank on these files. I always set resolution to auto. Maybe i shoudl try different resolutions and see if it makes any difference.
For me I couldn't find any pattern on the files it is failing. May be you could detect some pattern with the files that are not playing.

Sorry, I couldn't give a solution other than to suspect all 5990/92s could be having issues with HDMI-DVI connections. Maybe Phillips might have an answer.

But curious, what would be the benefit of making simultaneous connections if that is what you are doing. How do you handle audio then.

Well I figured out that the YGB composite cables played all files fine, as long as the HDMI cord is not plugged in.
It plays it at 480p, which doesnt look terrible.

    Weird though, any ideas why?

Since you guys proved to be so handy, I figure Ill ask another question:

I have a 500gb WD Hard drive (FAT32) and up until recently Foldersort has worked well. But it seems that it no longer works. I have two laptops, both running Vista and I can no longer properly run Foldersort. (it says that it fails to create a Temp Foldersort Folder, blah blah blah)

I've also tried Drivesort and FatSort, neither of which work. My hard drive seems to be functioning fine though, and I cant seem to find anything in the Properties such as permissions or Read-Only options checked that may be preventing it.

Any ideas? Or any other programs that may work?

    Thanks in advance
