I am using Win XP Pro with a 6x Samsung DVD rom.
Untill 2 days ago I was ripping the DVD with Smartripper at around 3-4x now all of a sudden it has dropped to 1.3x on average.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this would happen.
No i have not changed the ASPI layer or anything like that.
Please help.
Cheers

have you tried this with dvds that you have ripped at faster speeds with before... cause it does depend on the dvd... i will get up to 15.9x with my 16x pioneer drive with some dvds, but with other get a max of 1.3x.

Yes I have tried DVD's that i have done before but the speed has gone down to 1.3x it has just taken me 1 hour to rip Stir of Echoes with the disc in perfect condition too. Have checked the DMA setting - thats enabled so i am at a loss on this.
I am starting to think that my drive is starting to go. -
you didnt change anything???
like no new hardware installed, no settings changed, no new programs installed?
that is weird if nothin has changed... i dont know what to tell yah. -
No changed absolutely nothing, drive just started to go slower and will not go above 1.3x.
So totally lost with this one now -
As a last resort i have now installed FORCEASPI with no luck as it still will not go above 1.3x.
Thanks to everyone that has tried to help but i think i may need to get a new dvd rom drive.

SORTED IT
All I did was go back a few day on Win XP system restore and i am back to getting 3.4x again on average.
Woohoo
Maybee this helps people with a similar problem -
"Funny"; I'm searching the forums to find a solution to the same problem I got since 2 days. "Coincidentally" I also use a Samsung 6 speed (606F) to rip under WinXP. Since two days the ripping speed of every disc (incl. earlier done discs) keeps dropping down and up, some discs don't even get ripped at all. (During ripping I get error messages).
Previously I had speeds around 2-3 speed. Now it goes up and down between 0.0 and 5.0 and as said in a lot of cases crashes at some point.
Also when I use DVDDecrypter the buffer seems to stay unused....
There has to be a solution to this problem. Personally I think I did some setting wrong in TweakXP, though I haven't used that program in weeks....
Greetz
Mars-LThere R 3 sides on every story;
Yours, Mine and the truth -
Here's the real reason why....
By default, XP configures your drive as using UDMA....if XP finds that 6 or so i/o errors occur, it'll switch it back to PIO, even though everything is set ok in the bios....it won't let you change it back...and the only way to get it back to use UDMA is to either:
1. Roll back your registry
2. Uninstall the IDE controller...have XP find it again.
Cheers!
