hello to everyone. im new here. i've been trying to burn movies that are in Avi. file to watch on my house dvd player but haven't been able to. i don't know if the problem is in my burner, converter, files, etc. i've used convertxtodvd, winavi, dvdflick, divxconverter, avitodvd. they all convert the files to dvd or mpeg2 in a folder. from there i've tried burning them to a dvd using 1clickdvdpro, nero, clonedvd, drag'n'dropcddvd. they burn succesfully(or al least that's what it says when the dvd is finished burning)but when i play them on my house dvd players they don't work. one house dvd player says something about the dvd being dirty, but the dvd is clean.
i used nero to export the downloaded avi. files in mpeg2 .then use that mpeg2folder in nero again to recode or encode(i don't know which one's right). then burn it, it worked, but the proccess takes about 6-9 hours.
i've searched all over the net . i'd REALLY appreciate some help, i've wasted a lot of blank dvds. thanks.

Of all that software you have mentions, I would only consdier DVD Flick or ConvertXtoDVD. Personally I prefer FAVC. Most of the rest is garbage.

Once you have converted and have the Video_TS folder, with all the VOB, IFO and BUP files, use Imgburn to burn to good quality discs (preferably Verbatim or TY). Use the latest version of Imgburn, select the Burn Files/Folders option, and select the Video_TS folder. Imgburn will work out the rest.

Hello everybody, im relatively new to converting and burning and have the following problem.....
The past 9 dvd's I have burned, have given the message (unknown disc) once i have tried to play them on my dvd player, previous to these recent failures most of my dvd's have worked perfectly, I haven't changed any settings or the brand of my blank dvd's etc...
These are the steps I usually take...

    1. I search for .avi files from torrentz.com which then download within bitcomet
    2. I convert to dvd using winAVIvideoconverter which puts everything into correct folder with correct files
    3. Then I burn

note: I have k-lite pack codecs installed and on occasion will use ashampoo to burn too, but at the moment ashampoo doesn't like my files either.

any advice atall will be greatly appreciated, it's driving me mad x

But... isn't it easier (since OP is a newbie) to just replace the dvd player with one that is capable of MPEG4 playback and play all those divx/xvid files as they are?

I saw supposedly very good player (with all the capabilities) by The Evil Company Which Name Starts with Letter S* (I don't have it myself but this model was highly praised on our and other boards too) for mere $39 on sale at Costco/Price Club not long ago.
Maybe it's just me, I wouldn't 'convert' anything nowadays, I'd just replace the player with a model that is more capable.
Except for quicktime and realmedia garbage even crappy standalone players can play almost any current common formats, why waste your time for conversions.

I know people will bash me for it, but IMHO that's alraedy one problem - the "codec pack".
Why do you need this junk?
All the codec packs are not only unneccessary, but they also more often than not create more problems than they supposed to fix.
I don't know how many codecs this junk have installed on your system, but I know that all you need to play almost anything from the web are just less than handful of extra codecs:
XviD (or DivX at worst) codec
    and
    ffdshow codec
that's all, with these 2 you covered probably 90% of the videos available on the web and you can even play foreign videos with english text-type subtitles (you have to set up ffdshow to do so).
The rest that those 2 codecs won't play is either garbage (realmedia and such) or HD (AVC and such).

Of course it's easier, except the OP isn't asking what's easier..they're not asking what player is compatible with divx/xvid... it's a converting and burning issue....

You'd be surprised how many people don't know that modern standalone players can play a lot more than just DVD-Video discs.
And even more people don't know that i.e. their "almost new" just couple years old player that cost them $200 or more isn't worth a dime today, and they can replace it with much advanced model for very little money.
That's why I have just mentioned it for his consideration

And - in case you think so - it was not OT since I posted my advice about codecs as well, so what is your problem with my post actually?

No problem actually....And nothing surprises me these days, including you getting all sensitive about a silly little post....but since this is a "converting and burning" thread uhh nevermind ,don't want to hurt anyone's feelings....
And oh yeah! @ OP I'd recommend FAVC and Imgburn as well..
    Good luck!

Thankyou for this, it's very good advice and i'll act upon it.
Since my last post i've been clutching at straws, I scanned with avg (free), uninstalled winavi then re-installed it.

strange thing has happened, suddenly my 699mb .avi file is said to be large for my 4.7gb dvd, go figure!!!

I'll keep going and thankyou so much oxoxo

Hi clonewars thanks for the advice, but why would i change my dvd player when there isn't anything wrong with it? It has played alot of dvd's i've done in the past and it really seems as though the problem occurs during the converting/burning process, but i really do appreciate you've tried to help so thankyou again oxoxo
