  1. Hi,
I have recorded a VHS to DVd with my standalone DVD recorder.
Picture is fine but on the VHS the audio was very low volume and lot of hiss noise.

So, I extracted the dvd on my hard disk to m2v and wav (with tmpg mpeg editor).
Now I can edit the wav with any software. No problem.

    But now ?

To have the best ac3 (only stereo), can I normalize the wav and then compress it back to ac 3 ?

What's the best setting for ac3 (compression, gain,...) and best bitrate (128,192,256 ?) for a vhs source ?

For the encoder, besweet or can I use the encoder embedded in tmpgenc dvd author ?

    Thanks a lot.

    When you're satisfied with your "fixed.wav" ,
you can run aften without any fancy options:

    Code:
    aften input.wav output.ac3
or you might use toolame if you happen to prefer mpeg-audio

    Code:
    toolame -s 48 -m s -b 224 -e input.wav output.mp2

just normalizing the wav will also increase the hiss. nothing will change except the apparent volume will be louder. you will need to find a filter in your audio editor that works to remove the hiss and then normalize the volume.

the ac-3 encoder in tmpgenc is fine. use standard settings and for 2 channel audio 256 is more than sufficient for any source.

  4. Ok Thanks.
For the filters, I have them (NR pack from soundforge).

Can I normalize then apply the hiss reduction or hiss and then normalize ?

shouldn't make any difference which order you use.
