In the UK it's an overcoat, in Canada it's a lumberman's jacket. In the US it might be a Mac Attack...but that is something else...like a TV commercial.

  5. These kind of things will never stop being posted.

When I was a sysop back in the 80s when a 300 baud modem was hi-tech and 1200 baud was way out of reach these things were being posted.

Examples: My Commodore 64 is better than your Trash80
My TRS-80 is so muuch better than your Commy64
My Apple II beats your Trash80 and Commy64
And then the Atari computer users would chime in and so on.

And then reasons why each persons system was better.
Most likely it is a sort of Ego thing. Defending you choice.

The key thing to remember is that there is no Best anything.
Best by price?, Capacity?, Looks? etc.

  6. Yeah but my ZX-80 was w-a-y ahead of all of those. It was *green*. You could harness the heat generated by it to fry an egg and - to help save energy - it would turn the display off while processing...oh the power of an 8-bit 4MHz Z80A + 1K RAM.

Oh. Okay, I finally get it. We're not actually discussing anything here, just posting hit-and-run soundbites. Kinda like Obama and Hillary in PA. Gotcha. Just for the record, again, I use everything: Windows, Mac, Linux- depending on what I need to do and where I am. My days of absolutely preferring to use Macs died years ago upon the introduction of OSX, which is about as much fun to troubleshoot and maintain as Vista without the compensating advantage of huge market share. So my rants were not defending Macs so much as defending innocent Mac users (yes, there are some) against charges they're all morons brainwashed by Apple TV ads.

Myth and mystique sometimes continue long past reality. Macs lost their overall "ease-of-use" advantage the day OSX appeared: sure, here and there they are still easier for some people depending on what they need a computer for, and various factors make them less likely targets for malware on the net. Certain applications work differently on a Mac which some people find better suits them, and Mac product design can be very appealing if you go for that sort of thing. But old-line die-hard Mac fans need to grasp that "the computer for the rest of us" long ago became just another computer. On the other side, Windows gearheads need to accept that Windows is still perceived as a buggy, virus-ridden albatross by the majority of non-techie computer users: they don't go around daydreaming about how "powerful" and "versatile" it is, they go around praying they can get thru another day without a virus or corrupted Word document. Microsoft has 95% market share not because a majority actively "prefers" using it, but because people wanted a single "standard", and Gates was uniquely positioned to establish DOS/Windows as that standard. Had IBM bought him out in 1982 instead of licensing his OS, we'd probably all now be running some version of Unix instead, since IBM would have totally blown it with their proprietary culture (witness Apple).

Use whatever works best for you, but don't assume because your choice works for YOU it follows that everyone else is a non-person and a fool. That's all I was getting at. No more "rants" from me. No siree. Peace out, man.

Since we're on the topic of ancient history... I remember PC and Apple commercials back in the 1980's too, but at that time, I think that "PC" was actually an IBM trademark. Perhaps we'd be using a decendant of OS/2 on personal computers now if IBM had bought out Bill Gates fledgling company. Nothing else emerged in the Intel world as a rival to DOS for quite a while. CP/M had already bitten the dust by the mid 1980's. After that, the fight was between MS-DOS and OS/2.

IBM was a dominant player in the PC arena for a long time. Their sales and marketing organization was highly effective. Businesses that used their minicomputers and mainframes also tended to buy their PC's, if they used personal computers. For quite a while, it was everyone else vs IBM.

Yeah, but it's as close to a religious war as we are allowed to come. It will burn out in a another day or so, fester for a couple of months, then start up again. Just like all good religious wars.

What ever happened to GeoWorks? I could have sworn I tested their graphical package on our corporate PCs in the mid 80s.
