    I have a only a 27" 720p tv... and I have the transcoding codec set for mpeg2...

for those of you with bigger televisions or better eye sight, has the xvid or x264 produced a better image thats worth the chance of profile?

How is this a mkv2vob question? Aren't you asking instead what would be better to convert to, MPEG-2, Xvid, or x264?

Assuming that, all three can be great quality depending on bitrate and depending on what your system can play on your TV.

MPEG-2 needs about twice the file size as x264 to look about as good. Xvid is somewhere in the middle, but closer to x264.

So if an MPEG-2 file needs 8GB to look good on a big TV, then it will need roughly 5GB with Xvid and about 4GB with x264.

In other words, x264 compresses the best and MPEG-2 compresses the least.

But with converting times, x264 is the slowest and MPEG-2 is the fastest.

thanks for the reminder, I guess until I rebuild my setup I will have to stick with mpeg2 profile for speed since x264 profile may take too long...
