    Hi.

Newbie here, hope someone can help.

I have borrowed a friend's minidvd-r, a Canon DC100. I have brought the VOB file up on my computer, even played it a couple of times, but it's choppy and weird in some spots. I have Vegas, but it responds weirdly to the file...starts to play it then speeds up and runs through it in seconds. The file is over 800mgs.

Do I need to convert the VOB to an MPG file (for example) BEFORE running it through editing software? What program (preferably free) can I use that is SIMPLE and reliable for this task?

Need to know soon...I'm on an online deadline!

    THANKS!

VOB2MPG will extract the mpeg file from the VOB container without loss of quality.

Will it fix the problem ? Hard to say. The fact that the VOB is choppy and behaves strangely implies it may not be in a good state to begin with, so extracting the mpeg video might not make it play any better.

However you lose nothing by trying.

You know, I do have that program, but I don't understand all the default settings. Also, I want to keep the file intact that is on the dvd-r. Does it convert the file on the disk, or just converts a copy of it and saves to another folder?

Yeah, I wasn't so happy about the weirdness...very important interview with a film director and my other camera took a crap, so I had to borrow this one.

    Thanks for your quick response!

PS...another weird thing I noticed...when I play the disc through the Interactual Player, it runs nearly perfectly...unfortunately this is going up online, it's not just for my private viewing.

VOB2MPG extracts the mpeg content to your HDD. It cannot change the original disc in any way.

Do you have any idea about those settings? Should I just use the default ones? Because I honestly don't know what they represent...sorry....not so prolific on this.

There are no settings for VOB2MPG...

It is pretty much browse for the VOBs, then select an output folder.

My apologies! I was thinking of SVCD2DVD v2.5. I guess I was panicking.

Thanks for your patience and suggestions.

Uh oh. That's worse than just playing the vob. file itself. When I try to play it in anything the audio is out of sync, the video speeds up or has huge pauses in it. What next?

OK, I am probably driving everyone crazy...

I've put the mpg. into Sony Vegas 7. The beginning seems to be where the sound isn't syncing well. But as it plays on, it seems to even itself out. If you have any suggestions while I work on this a bit, it would be appreciated. I'm going to try a few things so I'm not over-posting on the subject.

I'll check back soon for suggestions.

    Thanks!

It sounds like either the file is in a pretty bad way, or your machine is having issues.

Just out of curiosity, are you seriously running media centre on a system with only 40GB of HDD space ?

It's only that small because I haven't moved files over to my externals for awhile. It's 150gb otherwise.

I still think it's odd that it's playing fine in interactual, but putzing out everywhere else. So far, in Sony it's doing ok. Haven't worked through the whole thing yet.

    Thanks for checking back in!
