Well, I get 3000 pages for about $30 from remanufactured HP carts locally. About 1/3 the cost of a new one from HP.

If you get an "office" style printer there is a wide range of suppliers for toner and parts.

  2. If I were to buy a new one I'd go for whatever Brother was current at the $130 price point: they have a remarkably good track record and the toner is reasonable.

Samsungs have issues as noted by others.

HP lasers below about $250 are really junky now: the last good one they made was the 1300, which I beat on every day and has not given me a moment's trouble in three years hard use. Brother owns this market now.

Lexmark is a MUST to avoid, at least the cheaper laser models. According to my IT guy, once installed Lexmark drivers are impossible to delete unless you perform a complete reinstall of Windows- eek! Also their cheaper laser printers are very prone to paper jamming and the toner cartridge costs more than the printer! In my office we've had two of them wig out and insist they are "jammed" when there is nothing in the paper path. Not even Lexmark could figure out what the hell was wrong with them. We ended up tossing them, which was a sin having just put new toner in each printer.

My personal laser printer at home is my trusty 16 y/o Apple Personal LaserWriter NTX, which is a genuine Adobe PostScript Level 2 version of the HP LaserJet IIP. Its a tank, never jams, never fails, and can print PostScript graphics with ease. Has both Mac and Windows connectivity and can run jobs from both platforms at the same time (which I do). It is limited to 300 dpi which was standard in 1992, and Staples sometimes runs out of the toner cartridges, but it serves me well. It was a steal in 1992: it had been selling for around $1100, I picked mine up from J&R for "only" $599 the week it was discontinued. Man, do we forget what this stuff used to cost: the "younguns" out there may not even know that networking was invented to share laser printers mainly because they originally cost $7000 apiece! Jeez. Now you can buy an HP *color* LaserJet for $300. Amazing.
