"Nortel Phone Systems" covers a lot of ground. Nortel makes phone systems for the small/home office all the way up to the switching equipment in the Telephone company central offices. What is your goal and what specific equipment are you looking to learn about?

I do not know anything on it. There is an openning for a job which requests for someone to at least know something about nortel phone systems so i am trying to read up on it.

I guess that it is going to be for the switch board, teleconferencing and for small home and office.

That is as much as I can assume

That's not much to go on. Is the job to install or service the equipment? Or to be a console operator? Or a telecom service coordinator? Something else? If it's to service the equipment, then to be blunt, you don't qualify and can't learn enough, quickly enough, to get the job unless they are willing to train you. If it's to be a console operator, I might be able to get you some info on the operation of the console, but it won't be the same as having experience operating one.

Maybe it's a language barrier thing, but this doesn't make sense to me. I suppose it's not impossible, but Console Operators do not install the equipment. They take incoming calls and transfer them to the appropriate party.

I don't know what a "telecom service operator" is, but a telecom service coordinator keeps track of a companies communications equipment, usually including pagers and cell phones, as well as the phones physically connected to the PBX. They may keep a small stock of replacement phones on hand so if a phone breaks, they can easily replace it and then send the broken one in for repair. This person may also get trained to make simple changes to the pbx and/or voicemail (usually name changes), but this will vary depending on the equipment and the training involved is usually planned with a 4 hour window and several follow up calls. Most service and installation is performed by a service technician that comes from the vendor. Sometimes, depending on the size of the organization, the telecom service coordinator and console operator are the same person.

You'll have to define "easy fixes". The only easy fixes I know are not really Nortel specific and relate to wiring and handsets. Anything more than that will involve different procedures for different equipment, so we're back to the question of what Nortel Equipment are we talking about?

    thanks for the information.

I am quite enthused on the matter of the telecom service coordinator.
Do you have any material or know where i can find any material on the tasks the telecom service coordinator would perform.

As i said before, I do not know anything about Nortel Equipment. What I know is what you are telling me now. I saw in the job description that a know how on Nortel equipment is a requirement. I do not know what equipment they are using so my intentions is to read as much as I can so that if I am selected and do have an interview; I do not make myself look like an ass when I am talking.

How about you reprint the job description? Don't name the company or where the job is located, but tell me what you know about the company that has the opening. From your descriptions so far, I still can't determine what you need to or should know.

  10. Sounds is a deskside support type of opening. The Nortel piece is most likely to help an end user to learn how to use their office phone (call transfers, voice mail management, conferencing, etc). They may want you to setup a new phone or replace a phone in an office or conference room. Given the environment and based on the other job requirements, it doesn't sound they are expecting you to program the Nortel Meridian switch. That generally requires a very specific skillset.

OK, based on that job description, they're looking for a service technician for all of their technology. As far as the phone service, you'll probably be expected to know how to enable phone ports, jumper, set, and test phones, update voicemail boxes, including name changes, re-enabling disabled mailboxes and changing passwords. This means you'll have to also know how to log into both the PBX and Voicemail. You'll also need to know about Hospitality Call Record interfacing and Call Accounting software. Chances are you'll need to know about T-1 trunking as well.

Most of these are skills you are not going to pick up by reading manuals (especially Nortel manuals). If you meet the qualifications for all of the other facets of the job, then there's no reason to doubt that you can learn these skills, but it will require hands-on training, either on the job or at a Nortel approved training facility. I know that's not what you want to hear, but if your skills are strong enough in the other facets, you may be able to convince them to hire you in spite of your lack of knowledge in Nortel equipment, but trying to convince them you have skills that you don't won't serve you or them.
