I split a movie into multiple avis. but when I try to recompress a segment and then add it to another segment that hasnt been recompressed(re-edited), an error shows that they have different data paths. how do I remedy this?

I've never seen that error. Are all the segments in the same folder? When you split the segments, did you do it on a keyframe or use the newer VD that can re-encode just at the split? The more common error is that the segments have different settings or don't match.
What AVI and audio format are they?
Splitting a video file, then just re-encoding parts of it before recombining might cause problems if the program sees something different between the segments. But your error seems to relate to where the files are being stored. -
You can't recompress one file and then add another because they will have different sampling rates.
You need to make sure that the file names are sequential (01, 02, 03 etc...) and make sure the box for autodetect additional segments by filename is ticked. Open the first file and click append avi segment and choose the second file and click open. All of the files will open and then you can compress as one file.
If you're going to compress the files before joining then you have to compress them all to the same specs but this option is hit or miss.
