I was converting FLV files downloaded from some web pages into WMV files so i could use them in Windows Movie Maker using the built in wizard in the VLC Media Player. (VideoLAN) When i got to converting files from halomaps.org, the converted WMV file only had the audio and the screen was black. The filed play normally as a FLV file and i have tried it 3 times checking the settings. other files did not do this, why does this conversion not work?

Tried other converters? Like winff, super. You can convert to avi also and wmm should accept it.

i will try that, but it should not make a difference. like i said before, only a couple of my files did this, the rest were fine. and i have tried doing it into different formats, it doesn't help at all.

WinFF did the same thing, only audio output. SUPER kept giving me errors so i couldn't even encode it. what could be the problem?

  5. I'm download some FLV's from halomaps.org and not have problems with conversion.

Please, upload some problematic file example on http://kotuha.com

    Whats errors in SUPER?

    Try MediaCoder or Avidemux.

im sry, but what do you mean by a problematic example? idk what picture that can help, it is simple, the file only has music, no video, and i have tried it on multiple media players. and the errors on super suggested that there is something internally wrong with the file itself. what will trying more programs do? more than one program had the same problem, isn't there something wrong with the file itself?

ok, mediainfo provided some interesting information. Yes of course the original had i video stream. When it was converted to WMV using VidoeLAN, there is no video stream in the file, i KNOW i told it to transcode the video! when i used winff to encode to AVI, that does have a video stream. however it only plays normal in VLC player. only audio plays in WMP and i cannot upload it into WMM because it doesnt recondnice the codec. the video stream is in "Dvix 3 Low". what can i do?

Required installed old DivX 3.11 or ffdshow (with active support for DivX 3).
(Eventually latest DivX with active Support decoding of Generic MPEG-4 video.)

MS Compatible Divx (mpeg3) profile it's not good choice.

Choose WMV or XviD in AVI (4:3) (if have installed decoder - Xvid or ffdshow).

And of course You can use other tools (with more flexible visual configuration) and can change profile settings in WinFF.

What You want? AVI with Xvid and MP3 or some other?

    BTW
When it was converted to WMV using VidoeLAN, there is no video stream in the file, i KNOW i told it to transcode the video!
But, what's video codec selected for ASF? WMV2 codec?

    BTW
You can change container (FLV>AVI) without recompression.
    Example used Avidemux.
Then for decode/play AVI with FLV1 or VP6F video require ffdshow.

Hey thanks for your help. i have figured out one major point that i have missed, i didnt have the Dvix codec installed! when i installed the video on the AVI file worked fine, i had some glitches with the audio though(error message C00D11B1) . so i uploaded it into WMM (now that i have the codec) and then saved it as a WMV. so now the file works! the only downside is that the quality is very poor. is there some way to prevent quality loss? as for the other WMV file before, the one without a video stream, i put it as a WMV3 codec for ASF. did that make a difference?

If you want to have some actual control on the video compression process,
drop WMM and choose Windows Media Encoder at least.

  12. You want edit this video in WMM or just only reencode?

as for the other WMV file before, the one without a video stream, i put it as a WMV3 codec for ASF.
    Ehm... in VLC?
I'm can't see possibility (libavcodec not 'contain' this codec).

    BTW
    Why WMV?
Why choose old msmpeg4 codec in WinFF?

the only downside is that the quality is very poor
    Of course.
    Reencode it loss quality process.
You reencode wideo in WinFF and after in WMM too - probably without any optimal settings.

Yes i know asf without video stream in WMA, but the file i converted had a video stream before i encoded it, it was pretty funny too. for some reason VideoLAN didn't transcode the video even though i told it to.
and i didnt do WMV in WinFF, i used AVI in that one. the entire reason i want to encode this is so i can edit it in WMM in the first pace. and you saying that re-encoding in winff after i put it through WMM will raise the quality?

Create new profile in WinFF, with example syntax:
    Code:
-vcodec wmv2 -sameq -acodec wmav2 -sameq
    Outut File Extension = WMV

    Or set higher video bitrate.

Or other (used lossless codec - but big transcoded file)...
    Code:
    -vcodec huffyuv -acodec copy
    Outut File Extension = AVI
Require installed HuffYUV codec (or maybe ffdshow) to deocde in WMM.

    BTW
What's output settings (profile) in WMM?
