I know many of you have waited for a modded firmware for the Philips 5982, so here it is. Its from a Brazillian guy by the name Ryan Jefferson. Portuguese is not my native language, so sorry for the rough translation.

Main features of this firmware is 40 character filename and great subtitle support.

    Download:

  6. I tried it and it works just fine. The only problem that I've seen with it is that when you read off the hard drive or usb you can't use long filenames.

Sorry about that guys. My partner who also has access to the server deleted it by accident and didn't tell me. I have many files being hosted there and didn't notice. The original post has been updated with the final version and I also add the version where you have 23 Characters through USB but it disables HDMI. Have fun!

Great job! Love the look of it. Long file names are great and very readable; very nice subtitles - finally readable and without the awful gray background. Haven't tried the USB version, since I hardly ever use my USB stick in the player ... and someday may need HDMI.

    Noticed a few problems though:

Cannot find the GOTO function for MPEG4 files. How do you use it?

Don't like the new automatic loading of subtitles for MPEG4. Can you make that an option in the setup?

Logos on background screen, at bottom (like the DivX logo), are half hidden below the bottom of the TV screen (on standard 4:3 NTSC television), bottom part lost in the overscan area.

When using the <Next> and <Previous> buttons in the browser to go back or forward by full page in filename lists, the screen still only moves by the original 4 lines at a time, instead of the 8 lines that are now visible (for example, necessary to press <Next> two times to get to the top of the next page).

Finally, a Feature Request: The one thing still badly needed is STILL/FRAME-BY-FRAME advance for MPEG4 videos. Drives me crazy that you can pause a DVD movie and advance by one frame at a time but you can't do it with DivX/MPEG2 videos. The same button (down arrow) that does it in DVDs just gives "prohibited" symbol in MPEG4s. So it's almost impossible to examine any individual frame in MPEG4s. Maybe this is a flaw in the player that can't be fixed in firmware, but is it possible to look into it?

Otherwise, like I said, this is a terrific job. Keep up the good work!

You can always apply the NON-HDMI firmware to retain USB long filename and then apply HDMI firmware when you need it later on.

To use the GOTO function, press the title button twice and it will come up. Remember when using USB with GOTO, it takes about 5 seconds to jump where you want to go. Maybe longer if your using a slow flash drive.

The automatic loading of subtitles cannot be added through the menu from what I know. My buddy of mine is the one that modifies these firmwares, I'll ask if he can add a menu option for this. He hasn't worked on firmwares for awhile due to work as this was supposed to be his final firmware.

Have you had the cropping problem before?. I have this problem too as it doesn't happen with my other LG player. I didn't really care much as only a little bit get cuts off. I'll inquire about this.

I inquired about this awhile ago and you can only jump 4 titles at a time, such a shame. I will ask again, maybe he has learned something new.

Frame by Frame is impossible with this player and DivX videos. Its a flaw in the original firmware itself because my LG can do this.

I'll let you know what he says

  17. Any ideas why this firmware might completely disable my USB port??

After updating to this version, all works well (although the volume level is about 50%, for some reason)... except that no matter what device I plug into the USB port (I have several that previously worked fine) I get nothing at all available. It doesn't even say "device not supported", it just doesn't even attempt to read them. Needless to say, I've tried to press the remote's USB input button without success, and I can't find any options in the setup that might be causing the problem.

I have no idea why it did that. This has worked on thousands of players. Ryan Jefferson has released many firmware files and is a veteran at doing it. Needless to say, we need to solve your problem.

What method of updating did you use?
What model player do you have?
    Which file did you choose?
Does the DVD player even recognize the USB port?

It's not a big deal, I was merely experimenting and I'm sure this firmware works perfectly when used as intended. In case you are interested what I was playing at, read on.

My player is the DVP5960/37. I read on a few forums (softpedia, etc.) that the 5980/5982 firmware would partially work on this model to get long filenames working with USB devices, so first I tried a 5980/12 modded firmware. Of course, this first firmware caused chaos being set for PAL televisions and all, but I managed to change the options despite the crazy flickering purple screen and it seemed to work okay. Naturally, it wasn't really okay, and although it played video perfectly it produced no sound whatsoever. A bit strange, I thought, but obviously the player can use the 5980 firmware in some manner.

So, I updated it to the one here (5982/37 v0.4 no HDMI with long USB file names) in the hopes that - being for North America this time - I'd have some success. Alas, you saw my problem. The setup screen and options worked perfectly (although sound - now working - was at a level of about 50%), but the USB port was not recognized at all. I tried several devices that previously worked, but nothing happened. It didn't attempt to read them and I didn't even get a "device not supported" message.

Oh well, them's the breaks. I re-energized my player with my old modified 5960 firmware. If only someone could come up with the long filename support on USB devices...

  21. Why does long filename for USB not work with HDMI out?

I am testing on DVP5990. firmware 31 from Philips sorts data files by descending file size, not name!

(edit: that seems incorrect, it seems to do 8.3 sorting. FolderSort http://www.jetman.dircon.co.uk/software/foldersort.html should help.)

Is it possible to replace the packaged background images with our own?

Is it possible to release this as modded 5990 firmware to retain WMV and WMA for the 5990/5992?

@pbush77 - Have you checked the divxpert forum?. vb6rocod has a nice modded firmware for the 5960.

@FredThompson - In order for long filename to work, you have to replace the ARM core with that of the 5960, thus, disabling HDMI out. There's no workaround for this.

Yes, its possible with MtkReplacer. Though the backgrounds have to converted to .mpg format using tmpgenc or something similar.

Its possible and hopefully will happen soon. I've asked the developers but nobody wants to mod it as its a new player. The developers usually mod players that they own and until that happens, we won't be seeing anything soon. I've started modding the firmware myself doing the easy modifications. Work is keeping me busy so I don't have much time.

  23. It just seems odd to me that the long filename routine from the disc source couldn't be reused.

I found something odd with the 5990 and PAL DivX on NTSC: Aspect ratio is screwed up. The TV (widescreen) has to be set for fill mode to get proper 4:3 display. Don't know if this is true of previous models.

Would you let me try your beta 5982 firmware on my 5990?

PAL DivX as in 25fps?. I have many 25fps movies in XviD format and they play fine on my 5982.

I have stopped modifying the firmware myself since now the veteran philips hacker vb6corod, has taken it over. He knows much much more than me. We should be seeing a new 5990 firmware soon. Don't expect 23 characters on USB though.
    Quote Quote
  25. Yup, 25 fps PAL DivX. I'll certainly supply one as a test source if anyone is really interested.

Some form of jukebox shuffle for audio playback would be really nice. Wonder if the firmware has playlist support. Didn't see a mention in the user manual.

Realized last night that FAT filenames are different than ISO from discs. Still, it would seem the only things to limit USB filename lengths would be counters or buffer space. Then again, that's said without any inspection of the code.

Thanks for the news about modded 5990 firmware.

  26. Have to ask.. (as this is very interesting) I semi-retired my 5982 when I got my 5520H (recorder). That solved some of the problems of 5982, longish filenames but one big bugbear for me is no support for mpg files on data disc.
Any one working on a modded firmware for these(5520,5570), or even thinking about it? Different backgrounds alone would be nice..

This mod doesn't work on Uk 5980 .. probably because its bin file should be 5980_12.bin .(24.08.08)

I am not sure it would work? I don't need all the subtitle mods (or HDMI) atm but the long file names length would be
    great.

    Excellent firmware! Thank you.

I have a request. Starting with the 5982, Philips disabled the ability to change the Video Setup Page->TV Type to PAL or MULTI. NTSC is the only value possible now. Can you mod the firmware to allow choosing of PAL or MULTI?

I want to take my 5982/37 player to Europe with me and it will be very useful to be able to set it to play on PAL TVs.

Hi I don't understand, your firmware is super, why do you stop the support?

I just want to say THANK YOU!! I've been waiting for the long filename support since I bought the DVP2982 last year.

I have two DVP5982's at home. I flashed both with the new firmware without any problem using a burnt CD. One of the 5982 attaches to a USB harddrive with 300+ Divx movies. This firmware makes it so much easier to browse through the movies. Everything works great so far. Now I can see most of the movie names and eight lines per screen. Subtitle support is excellent with selectable fonts, color and position.

It would be perfect if we can retain the HDMI port
