  1. After 3 days on the new computer my first Vista nightmare has started. For years I have been using Cuttermaran, personally I think its the greatest piece of video freeware ever made. Now I cannot get it to work with Vista. I have tried several different builds and have installed Framework 1.1 (not truly for Vista but I tried after a few errors), and it keeps crashing upon loading the video.

Anyone have this working with Vista?

Did you install it with 'Run as administrator'? I tried it on Vista Home Premium and it seems to load videos and work properly. I loaded a demuxed VOB with AC3 audio. No crashes anyway. I used the 1.69a version which is Vista compatible.

  3. I just tried that and got the same error. Even tried different video sources. I'm about ready to throw this new computer in the street and run over it. It looks beautiful though!

I don't think it's a Vista problem as I also tried installing it on my Vista laptop with SP1. No problems again. I think you may have something on the computer that's interfering with the install or operation of the program.

  5. Could be but I have no idea what would do that. I've had the computer for 2 days and don't have much on here yet. Just to clarify, it installs fine, loads audio fine but when I load the video it gets to the end and crashes.

  6. I officially give up. I've uninstalled and reinstalled a zillion times. I've tried older versions. No matter what, it crashes as soon as the video loads. I'm very tempted to format this brand new laptop and put XP on just for this one tool. It's that good.

  7. Success!

Since I could not read the support forum because it is in German, I emailed the creator and he responded very quickly and politely. For some reason on a Vista Machine, Nero and Groove tools cause this error. I uninstalled both and reinstalled Cuttermaran and it works beautifully. I am going to reinstall Nero and see if it comes back. If so, I can live without Nero but not without Cuttermaran.

Thanks for the resolution. I don't have either Nero or Groove on my Vista computers, so I never ran into that. You may be able to install Nero now. Sometimes the order in which a program is installed makes a difference. I suspect it has something to do with the drivers and which one has the priority.

I use ImgBurn for all DVD burning now. I never did use the rest of the Nero suite for encoding, so I didn't miss it.

It's also nice to know that a freeware author will respond to problems.
