  1. Hello everyone! I am trying to rip a DVD with mac the ripper to use parts of it in another movie I am creating. The problem is that it rips into an m2v format that I cannot open with any of the editing or playing softwares. Is there a way to rip it to a .mov format? If not what is a good converter program?

    Cheers

That's very strange. I've never had that happen to me. MTR is, as its name says, a ripper. So it converts vob's into ripped vob's. An m2v is a video stream (a component of a vob, but not a vob by itself), and is usually the result of a demuxing operation (which my version of MTR does not do). Maybe the latest version of MTR does this?

As to your other question, .mov is a "container" which can hold many different types of file formats, so you haven't provided us with enough specific information. After ripping, you can use any number of programs to convert the ripped files into other formats (such as .h264, etc) and package them up into QT .mov. On the Mac, ffmpegX is the most flexible, but there are numerous other tools for specific conversions.

Pedro, you're using some MTR options that you don't understand,
like title/demux, which yields an m2v video and an AAC audio stream.
You need to be knowledgeable to do much with that output.

Why are you ripping the DVD? Is it a commercial, copy protected
disc? If so, you're treading on thin copyright ice. If not, you don't
need MTR. As Tom said, ffmpegX is all you need.

Tom and I said ffmpegX, but I don't use it as often as I do MPEG Streamclip among
the free apps at versiontracker.com (which seems to have the more amateur-friendly
interface -- explicit "open DVD" feature, QuickTime-like editing, explicit "export to" a
    good selection of file formats).

let's not confuse or mislead the new guy....MpegStreamclip isn't free when it comes to
    editing VOB / .m2v streams.
It requires the $20 investment in the Quicktime Mpeg-2 codec.
