Just wondering if you guys see any significant difference between Facebook and MySpace, as it relates to reaching out to computer geek types? 8)

    Facebook is for social networking.

Myspace is for social networking when you're in high school and/or on a bad LSD trip

Most people choose Facebook because they are "more mature" and like to say they choose it because it suits then better. I have both. Don't really have a favorite.

The one thing I don't understand is private profiles (both on MySpace and Facebook). This is social networking site but you don't want to socialize with anyone?

I can see underage persons but 27 year old men and women?

Like I've told them before (my friends who have their profile set to private) its not going to stop that. Setting your page to private just prevents people from viewing who are your friends and other details. There is no preventing people from still sending you messages or friend requests.

I don't see whats hard to understand about someone setting their profile to private. They want to communicate with their circle of friends and don't want everyone else in the world knowing about their personal life. Whats so confusing about that?

If you're doing internet dating or think you're the next big whatever you would want the world to see or if you think your take on life really matters to total strangers then leave it open. It's really up to the individual to choose, that's probably why they call it "my"space.

Although it's not really yours with all the skanky ad's and skanky friend requests. Is facebook any better about that junk?

I guess we all know where you stand on this.

Its not confusing. Its annoying. I always get friend requests from people with their profiles set to private. Almost all the time I actually know the person but if they don't have a picture of themselves or its a tiny cellphone pic, I have no clue who it is.

    Facebook is much better.

Nobody sees anything about you (other than a small thumbnail photograph) until you've allowed them to view your site.

MySpace has deteriorated into just a crazy mish-mash of bands trying to get recognized, perverts trying to hit on little girls, and high-school kids bullying each other into suicide.

    Steer clear.

I actually don't have mine set to private, I just understand after being "out in the open" why some people wouldn't want to. I'm thinking about making the switch to facebook. I check myspace about once a month and it's always the same thing, new friend requests from MegaSlut1081, etc. etc. Not what I envisioned when I signed up .

I joined, found somebody I was looking for, exchanged phone/e-mail, then closed my account again. I try to keep my socializing confined to the "real world".

I do sort of consider forums (like this one) to be a means of interacting with others (maybe "socializing", maybe not) -- but at least most all forums have a primary focus, a point (i.e., "video help"). Myspace/Facebook is "just because". That didn't work when I was a kid (parents say "because" as a reason), and it doesn't work with me now either. If it has no point, it's pointless.

Then again, why not simply email them? Phone?

Personal life? Why is it on a MySpace page?Personal life and MySpace is like water and oil.

I'm not sure why I need to explain this, but: the overall idea of myspace is something that would allow a person to share what's going on in their life via music, pictures, video clips, written messages, etc. It is a hub of information about you for your friends (or strangers if you want) to see without having to call everyone or send out a mass e-mail and try to attach all the pictures/video clips, etc. It shouldn't be hard to see why that would be more convenient than phone or e-mail. Of course the friends you see daily you could tell about a lot of these things but there are others you don't see often. And you don't always carry around pictures/video's to show your friends in the "real world"...

As for the "personal life", the point of my comment you quoted was about setting your profile to private, so you could set up your "hub" for only the people you actually know or care to communicate with. Again, not hard to understand.

As said by others and such, Myspace is a netoworking site more aimed towards the younger generations. There isn't a lot of different things that make it harder in tools but Facebook has more of a private non advertising space to it. I'd say facebook would work out well more for people 20+ and myspace for people that are younger. I try to avoid MySpace because of a lot of spamming BS on there.

thanks guys... I was thinking more of the technical features, also just a concern as to who might buy out which.

imagine Microsoft or Sony just bought out VideoHelp

Facebook does do a good job at camouflaging the advertising on its pages.

Never been to facebook, no reason. I've been to Myspace twice. Shoddy css scripts and a butt load of flash. Never been back.

    Facebook is a CIA front - http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread291893/pg1

    :P

I think Myspace is cool for exploring bands & new music. It's basically free webspace, and heaps of bands (new and old, commercial and totally underground) have created their official pages there. It's great! I just wish you could upload more songs.

To be honest, I've never even explored Facebook. Last time I looked it wanted my email address and email password??? WTF??? Maybe I read it wrong... Surely I did?

Yeah, you're right. They do a really good job at covering their advertisements on facebook. I'm It seems like their layout really overlaps everything else.

I really don't understand why people think facebook is more "mature" then Myspace. I think it is the exact opposite. I signed up to Facebook because someone told me to view some pics on there and I had to set up an account.

How "mature" is superpoking? I mean really. You can "throw a cow" or "fling a thong" at someone through Superpokin. The superpoke feature is about as immature as you can possibly get. Buying someone as your pet is also a feature on facebook. And a bunch of other really immature things that are only available on Facebook.
