I am converting an H.264 mkv to avi with Alltoavi. It tells me to switch to RESTRICTED MODE when I add the .mkv to the list. I have tried every setting, but the audio is always ahead of the video on the outputted .avi.

Once you have the avi, open it in Media Player Classic, and use the + and - keys on the numpad to sync up the audio. Once you have the audio in sync, look at the delay (at the bottom of the status bar) and write it down.

Now open the video AVI Demux. Leave Video and Audio set to Copy, tick Shift, and put the delay number into the field. Save a new version of the file and test to see if the problem is fixed.

Ok. I'm trying to add the .srt subtitles now with virtualdub, but it says:
    Code:
[!] AVI: Variable bitrate (VBR) audio detected. VBR audio in AVI is
non-standard and you may encounter sync errors up to 3531ms when
attempting to extract WAV files or processing the audio in Direct Stream
Copy mode. Full Processing mode is recommended to decompress or recompress
        the audio. (bitrate: 130.1 ± 20.9 kbps)

Again, try AVI Demux. It will build a VBR map that avoids any shifting. You can then use any of the subtitle Video Filters to add your subs (including a version of VobSub).

AVI Demux has replaced Virtualdub for most bread and butter work on my system. I still use Vdub for specialist filters, but for basic fixes, joining etc, AVI Demux is so much easier.
