I need to keep a website that has some photos between 50k and 150k.....what sort of image compression is best for the web?

Jpeg or Gif and are there specific settings to utilise for the web? They will not be full size obviously but around 300px x 300px

    I will use photoshop.
    Thanks

I am not sure about a specific software, but I normally use Irfanview when I wish to upload a picture. You could also use the same trick used by web stores, upload a small picture and link it to another with best quality, in case a visitor wishes to see more details, he will have to load it in a different window.

    g'day Rudyard!

There are some possibly non-obvious considerations...

Gifs are only 256 colors (as I assume you know) so be sure to create archives of both your fullsize full color originals and the uploaded versions.

JPGs are usually close to GIFs in size; the main use these days of GIFs is animated banners, or page design elements like buttons.

You might want to consider that your pix can be pirated too, that might effect sizes used, compression, and you can also watermark them.

My best advice is to throw some or your best & worst pix onto a private web page, and then view them from a variety of friend's computers.

    Have fun!
