I have a lot of mpeg1 video files that i want to join and edit.
What free programs are out there that ye can recommend to perform these editing tasks?
If there was a great video editing prog that could cover a wide variety of formats,i might consider paying.
I have virtualdub but this will only edit mpeg2 files with the plug-in as ye probably know.

Virtualdub should be able to import mpeg1 but you must reconvert. If you just want basic cutting and joing you can use tmpgenc (under file->mpeg tools).

Do note that on some PCs, TMPGenc causes horrible sync problems if you try to use it for editing/joining. Nobody knows why it works fine on many PCs to do this and horribly on others. Maybe you will be one of the lucky ones.

I don't personally recommend any free editors for MPEG-1/2. VideoReDo and MPEGVCR both are 'try before you buy" and both can do what you want. You could check them out.

  4. If none of the others fancy your taste, give mpg2cut2 a shot (free)

I personally think avidemux (free) is the best general editor/encoder because it supports nearly every codec and container, and is updated almost weekly
