1.
I'd like a few opinions on what the best FLV converter is...?
I've tried Sorenson (the older version to the current one).
I've tried RIVA encoder.
I've tried the Macromedia on (not the current one).
Nowadays... I use RIVA.
2.
I need to create FLV's from pure video (not sure if this is the correct name! I'm just referring to DV format).
What I need to do: crop the video - top, bottom, left or right... to get an irregular video size.
What's the best method of creating an FLV from this video...??
What I currently do: load video into VirtualDubMod, crop and then save as XVid format video.
And then use something like Riva to create the FLV video.
Is this method any good...? Should I just be saving the video as the same format output and then putting into RIVA?
I also use the above method when resizing video (rather than stick it into RIVA).
Any replied would be great.
Thanks.

thanks for the reply. good to know i might be doing it the right way.
just one thing:
1. is it better to crop/resize and save as xvid and then create flv
or
2. is it better to crop/resize and save as dv video and then create flv
??
let me know.
thanks.

you can convert to FLV using:
Automen it will resize and convert in one go
Avanti will also convert in one go, with same options as Automen, its graphicaly(GUI) more richer than Automen
Automen uses Mencoder, Avanti uses ffmpeg, from my tests and from what i read here flvs produced by mencoder have a bit more quality.
take a pickI love it when a plan comes together! -
hey: thanks a lot.
i've never heard of those ones before...
i'll definitely give those a go.
riva: also allows you to crop.
but doesn't like you doing it much - it falls over a lot.
for that... sorenson (older version) seemed to be better.
also: batch processing...? apart from riva and sorenson... are there any others that do btach processing?
thanks. -

Very handy...at least for me.
AviDemux has a very similar interface to VirtualDub....which I also use often.
After I resize, clean up the edges and maybe sharpen a bit....I output
to Xvid by "final output size" - two pass and make the audio MP3 (via LAME).
I usually put in 50MB as a final output size for a 5 to 10 minute clip.
Sometimes I upload the Xvid....sometimes I convert the Xvid to FLV
with Riva FLV Encoder....depends on my mood that day.
The only problem is....I think AviDemux cannot work with uncompressed AVI...at
least not for me....I might be doing something wrong though.
And Riva FLV Encoder has the same problem.....I think. -
ON2 Flix pro (latest version 8.053) is IMHO the best encoder.
Its fast, offers low level controls and On2 wrote the VP6 codec.
Use the 2 pass encode method for best results, set quality to best and use a bitrate ge 1024, set sharpness as required.
If you require deinterlace, do that with the original DV editor first. the FLV encode the resulting DVavi.
Cropping is probably best done in the DV editor.
if by cropping you actually mean't resizing, then this can be done in ON2 Flixpro during encoding.
Sorrensen squeeze offer the least best visual result for FLV.
