I load a large avi (200MB) with AC3 sound into Soundforge, no problem.

Edit the sound, no problem (enhancements, volume, fad in, etc)

When I try to save it, however, the only options to save the whole file produce a huge 15-20Gb uncompressed file.

Any ideas how to get this done, and preserve the original video (compressed).

VirtualDub can only boost sound, but I wan't able to make it work with AC3. Its audio editing is anyway too limited.

You could convert the uncompressed wav to ac3 using aften if you can't find a solution to sf.

which, I guess, involves demux-remux and concerns of losing ac3 multichannel sound as I expressed in another post (and already got some helpful hints thanks to your great members - thanx!)

sf is really just an audio editor. to use it you should first demux and then import just the audio. avidemux should work. sf 9 pro will render ac3 5ch. so when it's done you can remux back with the video.

I just replied with this issue to another thread, but the bottom line is - I got best results with Nero Wavedit which does a great job in decoding and encoding (edited ac3) preserving multichannels and is really simple to use. Used some ac3 plugin in order to accomplish this successfully.

Unless you wish to edit each of 6 channels separately (Nero can do that too, as well as Audition), this is the simplest way to make some basic adjustments to a multichannel or stereo ac3 (boost, fade in/out and other basic and not so basic stuff that Nero can do).
