I have a few videos with ac3 sound that needs to be edited, before compiling and authoring my own DVD.

Some have sound levels that are too low and need a boost.

Others need some other adjustments, such as fade in/out.

All audio editing software I found that can read ac3 files, converts them into simple stereo PCM wav and the multichannel info is therefore lost after saving.

Even if I were to accept this, and regardless of which audio editor I use to alter the sound recordings, some of the free programs I tried to re-mux the audio and video, gave me junk VOBs that are choppy and don't play well after remuxing and re-authoring the DVD (only tried VobEdit to demux, ImagoMPEG-muxer).

    Any thoughts?

HeadAC3he does convert to multi-channel waves. Aften can convert these back to AC3.
No native way to change volume, unfortunately. The only tools I've seen that work with AC3 without decompressing them are cutters, like Delaycut, and stretchers, like Audioscale.

I've used GuiforDVDAuthor, which uses mplex for muxing. Also Muxman. Both work well.

Thanks for your suggestions. I played w. ac3 editing last few days and got absolutely best results w. Nero Wavedit. Ti is exactly what I needed. I think I had to install some kind of plugin to be able to decode/encode ac3 in multichannel (Dolby ac3 filter), but it worked like a charm.
