I want to convert an AVI file to DVD. These are the steps I follow:
    - Add the movie to ffmpegx.
    - Select DVD PAL 16:9 (720x576).
    - Select 4400 Mb size and push Rate.
    - Audio bitrate 192kbps, 48KHz.
My problem is that the result file size is about 3Gb. I loose more than 1Gb that could be used to increase video bitrate and get more quality. Why does it happened? I put 4400Mb in size but the result file is 3000Mb. Any idea to fix this?

    Thanks

  2. filesize = bitrate x running time

The duration of your film is probably not long enough.

You cannot exceed the maximum bitrate specs of DVD (9800kb/s for video) - or it won't play on a DVD player

Movie lenght is 145min and for 4400Mb ffmpegx sets video bitrate at 3998kbit/s, but I don't get a 4400Mb file, only 3Gb.

First, how good does the result actually look? Beyond a certain bitrate, quality does not improve much.

Second, do you select the video bitrate *after* setting the audio bitrate, or before? Set audio rate first, then have ffmpegx select the video rate. It won't make much difference, but depending on what the default is, it can make some difference.

It can also be that your Q values are set such that the quality objectives are met at lower-than-target bitrates. If you don't like the output quality, then try adjusting the Qmin and Qmax values to lower ones. That can increase quality and filesize.
