I use VirtualDub (1.7.7) frequently. It is not uncommon for a video file to be flagged wih VBR on loading. Occasionally I have files in which I want only a small segment of the file. Sometimes I can ignore the VBR flag, make my selection, and the resulting file audio is synced OK with the video. Recently I've encountered several files that are not synced properly.

On many files I have successfully extracted (using VirtualDub) the audio to WAV; used dBpoweramp to convdert to MP3 (Lame) CBR; use VDub-MP3 to mux a separate video stream with the MP3; than try again using VirtualDub.

I have several stubborn files where this is not working. When I try to open my newly re-muxed file, I continue to receive the VBT flag.

Although it doesn't make sense to me, I did try full audio compression using VirtualDub, however I'm ending up with file sizes that are very large, even when I use MP3 compression.

Can anyone suggest what I should be doing to correct this problem? I'd like to understand why this problem persists on certain files, but can be corrected using the above method on many other files.

    Thank you in advance.

  2. Update to version 1.8.0. It fixes most VBR audio problems.

Also, VBR files that are recoded to CBR MP3 with still get a flag on opening. Just click OK for Virtualdub to automatically detect the bitrate and everything should be fine.

Try VirtualDubMod, it handles VBR audio much better.

I used to re-encode the VBR audio into CBR when joining AVI files, and very often I encountered synch problems, but after switching to VirtualDubMod I've never had that problem.

Unless you want to cut files without modifying audio. Vdub 1.8.0 is capable of properly saving the cuts keeping VBR audio header.

  6. In my experience VirtualDubMod and VirtualDub 1.8.0 handle VBR audio equally well. But in VirtualDubMod you have to answer no when it asks if you want to rewrite the header.

No it doesn't. There aren't very many reasons why you would need to use VirtualdubMod over the new version of Virtualdub. Maybe working with MKV files which VirtualdubMod doesn't totally support.

VirtualdubMod is 2 1/2 years old and will never be updated again whereas Virtualdub is updated constantly

Thank you all for your suggestions. I'm currently downloading some of your suggestions and will experiment some over the next few days. I will continue to read all posts, so if I'm not able to respond immediately, know that I will soon.

    Is it really that good?!

    Gotta try it.

    Thanks a lot.

  10. Is there a web site that keeps track of all the new input filters for VirtualDub? It's a pain checking up on them individually. Or waiting until you post a new list!

I'm not sure how often it's kept up but thedeemon.com VD filter page is a lot easier to sort through than neuron2.net or virtualdub.org: http://thedeemon.com/VirtualDubFilters/

EDIT: And yet another site I just noticed: http://www.hlinke.de/Home_e/Vdub-Filterlist/vdub-filterlist.html

Might as well put up the addresses of the other two:
    http://www.virtualdub.org/virtualdub_filters.html
    http://neuron2.net/

    And another: http://www.geocities.com/shawnroy03/virtualdub_filters.html
And of course the MSU group. They've developed quite a few VD filters lately: http://compression.ru/video/index.htm

And one that's a bit hard to find, Colormill: colormill2.1.1.zip

  12. Thanks redwudz. I know most of those sites but they don't seem to be tracking the input plugins.

Well, VDubMod has AVS script editing built in, not in the vanilla edition.

Since basically the only thing I use it for is to tweak AVS scripts, that's pretty vital to me.

I've found AviDemux very reliable for cutting and joining AVI files.

Is it somehow better than AVSP in script editing?

  15. I use and will continue to use VDubMod because it works and does everything I want it to do. When the time comes that I need something that VDub has and VDubMod doesn't, then I'll consider switching. It's mostly inertia on my part; I'm too lazy to go through another learning curve when I'm comfortable with VDubMod.

I do use AvsP for the most part now when creating AVS scripts.
The sliders of course are wonderful.

But AvsP doesn't have an integrated player, you can only frame advance and it doesn't do audio at all.
I actually use VDubMod as the player for AvsP.

One useful feature VDubMod has is cutting video and then I can open the script editor and "import frameset as trims" which pastes the trims into the AVS file. (Yes, AvsP has a similar feature, but as I still have to use an external player to check the result, I might as well use VDM for the whole job.)
