Ok, so somewhere along the line I broke the optical drive on my recoder (bios upgrade, using Maxell DVDs or excessive dog hair, who knows) .

I have the relevant connections from the combi output on the recorder to my graphics card input....but what do I do now?

Or I believe you can pull the drive out and connect that (shouldn't be a problem as I've been building PCs for 15 years) as another hard drive, but will there be any file format issues?. Or is there a simpler way of doing it?

Once I've recovered the drive what would be the best software to edit it with (cutting out adverts etc)?

Now that my recorder is dead what should I get? Is there a portable hdd device that can record from a Sky box in realtime and transfer to the PC at high speed?

Any help would be very much appreciated, I've got about 50 hours of telly to transfer

Have you tried a Laser Lens Cleaner, a disc with a small brush on it? Should be less than US$10.

It's saved many people who thought their burners were dead... at least till they blew some more smoke and dust in them. (A single dust mite can block over 400 tracks of a DVD if over the lens.)

  3. Don’t have the 740 but have the 5045 and ilo RHD04 which is liteon. The 5045 and DHD04 format is FAT 32 and I should think the 740 is. I don’t know your PC setup But by your Posts you should not have problems
I use Win 98se and do not have an issue. Most users are using XP etc. They should do OK but require some specially handling when using NTFS
You might look at these sites as I believe that both ---[Harpmaker and Normando ] have taken the liteon HDD to a PC for formatting etc
In stalling the drive should not damage it or loose information.

The older Liteon units had problems with the DVD drives and many have been replaced with PC drives. I don’t know about the 740. A replacement drive can have an effect on the unit functions. The above sites have info on replacements, formatt and sticky's on FAT 32 and NTFS

Did you upgrade the firmware, The make of Disk should not have a damaging effect.
A loog time ago I tried cleaning and reparing the drives. The problems persisted and I finally replaced them. They Have worked without fail. Thats almost 3years ago and have never cleaned them
