I recently purchased a new Samsung 50 inch Plasma TV, and I struggle with getting my display card to project correctly. Some supported resolutions are okay, while with some other supported ones I get an error message that this mode is not supported, although the manual specifically states that they are. And the ful HD resolution (1920x1080) displays sqeezed and occupying only about 70% of the screen (full height, but leaving broad black panels of unequal size on both sides). I am using an HP desktop compter with NVIDIA GEFORCE 6600. My laptop projects full HD without problem.

Anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

First, ensure that you have the latest drivers nVidia drivers installed. How do you have the PC connected to the TV?

What is the native resolution of this TV? Plasmas are usually 1024x768 or 1366x768. Some are 1920x1080p but if you buy one of those your power bill skyrockets. Check your manual for accepted resolutions over the PC port (VGA) or HDMI. It is all listed.

Thanks, both. Latest drivers are installed. TV is connected via VGA cable, and the manual states that native resolution of 1920x1080 is supported in both VGA (VESA CVT) and HDMI/DVI (VESA CVT and VESA CEA). The supported modes table also gives horizontal, vertical and pixel clock frequencies, which as fas I know I can not set.

  5. You should use a DVI to HDMI cable and set the resolution at 1920x1080 60 Hz progressive. Put the Samsung in "Just Scan" mode with the little blue (PSIZE) button on the remote. That will get you 1:1 pixel mapping just like a big computer monitor. I do this with my 8600GT and a Samsung 1080p LCD. That should work with your VGA cable too, but the picture won't be quite as good.

  6. I had a similar problem with similar hardware and here is what worked for me (below). I could not get it to work at 1080p and what is listed below is for the 720p setting. I am putting in a 7600 in place of the 5200 this weekend, so I will be at it again.

In short, the "Use Display Adapter Scaling" setting on the video card's driver settings is what solved my problem when I was in your situation.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Installation of Samsung 46" LCD HDTV with DualView monitor:
[This is what it took to get the display correct on the 16:9 HDTV]
    (1280 x 720 = 1.78 and 16:9 = 1.78)

    Display Properties
    Settings tab
    Select Display 2
    1280 x 720 pixels
    Advanced button
    GeForce FX 5200 tab*
    Device selection
    Device Adjustments button
    Use Display Adapter Scaling

*If GeForce 5200 tab isn't present:
    Adapter tab
    Properites
    Driver tab
    Update Driver

  7. Sorry, an addition, the above is with the TV set on 16:9 and the video card connected via DVI (PC) to HDMI (TV).

    MG,

Thanks, I also get the 1280x720 to work (at 70 Hz), and that is OK, but I am annoyed that the full HD resolution doesn't function when it is supposed to. I guess I will have to upgrade my video adapter.

  9. Try updating the graphics card's drivers first (from the nvidia web site), if you haven't already.

  10. I will tell you now that what ever driver is default with the card is much more simpler and easier to use, when I updated to the newest driver from nVidia's website things got much more complicated (the GUI is way more advanced) and there was no benefit to picture fit or quality.

However, it may be different in your case so don't be afraid to give it a try and you could always use the "roll back driver" feature if needed.
