    Hi all,

I am using this player along with a HDCP compliant 22" philips widescreen monitor over HDMI to DVI cable. But there is no upscalling above regular 480p. I also updated the firmware to the latest version available from philips website (.........43). Also when I downloaded the update file and unzipped there were two files-

    1. DVP 5982_37.bin
    2. DVP 5982S_37.bin

Which one to burn on the disk for the upgradation? Or do i have to burn both?
After burning both and updating the firmware i still cannot upscale over 480p.

    Pls help me.

    Thanks

As I have stated before, this unfortunately appears to be the normal behavior of DVD players when playing CSS-encrypted DVDs. Please see this thread:

Note vrex's post towards the end in particular, but the whole thread should be of interest to you.

Try it with DVDR you made yourself.

  4. I've heard of people having problems if they include both of the firmware files when they update. The successful updates I've rad about only put DVP 5982_37.bin on the disc. They do not put the one with the S in the name, or both.

I have a DVP-5960 and it has no problems upscaling DVD over HDMI to an HDTV.

I think it's the DVI TV input that's causing the lack of upscaling options. My 5960/37 is the same (my TV doesn't have HDMI so I use an HDMI/DVI cable). See this post:
    http://forum.doom9.org/showpost.php?p=858973&postcount=29

I've used four firmwares with mine since I got it about a year and a half ago; no change in upscaling options with any of them.

Not a big deal to me since my TV is handling the upscaling fine.

Don't know for sure if this applies to the 5982, but it appears to be very similar to the 5960.

Edit: I just looked at the notes for the current 5982/37 firmware you have (37.07.32.43) and it says that one of the fixes is "HDMI to DVI TV: resolve set losing resolution setting upon standby", so maybe they have addressed this issue. Pretty vague and doesn't address the fact that the higher resolutions are grayed out in the settings menu, and that the upscale button doesn't work (on the 5960, anyway). But maybe this upgrade will fix your problem. At least it implies that you can change resolutions on HDMI to DVI.

And, like jagabo, I've read some posts from people who have had very bad results trying to upgrade using both files, so I'd follow his advice.

    Hi all,

thanks for the infos. But most of my dvds are either copied, homemade or there is no copy protection at all. So why would not i be able to upscale over 480p. My monitor has 1680X1050 resolutions. is it because of this or due to HDCp enabled monitor? how do i disable HDCP? again non hdcp compliant monitor would not be able to display any image from the dvd player.

    Thanks.

You can't disable HDCP, but if the DVD's in question are encryption free, then it doesn't matter. You are likely having a firmware or TV/monitor issue. With a 22" screen, you aren't likely to notice any difference anyway. Especially when most TV's scale any input to their native resolution. It will be a matter of which hardware handles scaling better, your cheap DVD player or your TV. In most cases, the TV does it better.

I have a Samsung 226BW computer monitor with DVI-D + HDCP and can plug that to a Motorola HD cable box and get 720p fine. It even scales to 1680x1050. If I try that with my Viewsonic without HDCP, the Motorola box freaks out and displays HDCP on the LED. Your DVD player may be rejecting 720p or 1080i settings unless an HDCP connection exists.

My JVC XV-N650 DVD player refuses upscale over HDMI without HDCP but will upscale (non-CSS discs) over analog component.
