    Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to convert an existing VIDEO_TS directory into a DivX ultra disc. I really like the compression gain, as wella s the authoring of the DivX Ultras, as well as the self-contained single file. I wa curious if anyone knows of - the possibility to do so ?, to do so in batch ?, or if this is even on the radar for DivX or any of the other Mpeg4 manufacturers - it seems to be a good application for them to add into development - for people to gain compression without re-authoring.

I am aware that I could re-encode the vobs to avi's - I am looking for entire title conversion.

    Thanks all

I think TMPGenc DVD Author can convert your DVD to Divx Ultra with menus, but it's not free. I am not aware of any free program that supports the Divx Ultra container spec with menus, subtitles, etc.

    Hi Jman98,

I am aware TMPG DVDA 3 - can author to DivX Ultra - that is where I'd gotten the idea - I know it can also import each title set (from a VIDEO_TS) as a new source track to author out as a DivX ultra disc - That would mean though you must re-author the disc (but use the DVD as a source for the clips)

To clarify my question is can it import and convert a VIDEO_TS (an entire disc) - keep its menu'ing, etc - and convert that to a DivX ultra disc ?

    So simply VIDEO_TS (in) -> Newdisc.divx (out)

    One step - full conversion

    Thanks

What you propose CANNOT be done. You always have to re-author. Sorry.

    sure there is:
    http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=109622

free and no reencoding needed if you're using divx encodes files encoded before

I checked the doom9 link - if I am following the dialogue correctly, you are converting each part to DivX and then simply re-authoring the disc. I believe if you wish to go that route you could use TMPG DVDA3, etc, etc.

I am / was hoping to avoid re-authoring the discs.

What i was looking for is a one step utility to batch process existing VIDEO_TS directories to convert them down to the better compression and single .divx file storage.

Baldrick, I'd love to program it up, although I unfortunately do not have the knowledge to do so.

I do feel this would be a very good aspect to be added to any of the existing DivX authoring apps to give them headway into promoting their format, as well as letting consumers consolidate their libraries.

    Thanks all.

I downloaded three programs to try and do this and none of them will do it.

DivxMediabuilder requires AVI files to begin with so it's out of the question.

TDA3 with Divx Authoring will accept the DVD Video_TS folder but will not use the Menu that is on the DVD and...

DivXAuthor is the exact same program as TDA3 with Divx Authoring without the ability to author a DVD and it takes three hours to create a 50 minute .divx file when you can create the exact same file with Virtualdub and the Divx 6.8 codec in about 10 minutes.

If the creator would make a step by step guide for DivxMediabuilder then it might be able to work since you can use the VTS_01_MENU_1.VOB if you convert it to AVI but the help files are not very helpfull and you have to convert the DVD to AVI with AC3 before doing anything so it also takes forever to not do what you want it to do in the first place.

I always assumed that DivX Author would do exactly what you want to do and am very disappointed that it doesn't.

I don't see any options to do this but will keep looking.

you can replicate the menus from a dvd onto divx ultra, extract the menus and convert them, extract the movie and convert it and then put all the pieces together with divxmediabuilder, i've done it.

Will i do it again? No

not worth the troube.... but its possible, there are several examples in that doom9 thread

    Ricardo,

How did you even get DivxMediaBuilder to work? Most avi's (either DivX or XviD) I put into it give errors. Either this program is not ready for prime time or something on my pc is goofing it from working. I've contacted the author, but never got a reply back. Most of the errors I get, say "bad Fourcc". I change them with Nic's FourCC Changer, but that doesn't help. Very aggravating. I'm glad at least someone here is able to get it to work.

I'll just wait for future updates before trying again.

extract the menus and convert them
Convert them to what? I have a Menu.avi file that I created with VirtualdubMod from the VTS_01_MENU_1.VOB (along with an AC3 file that I demuxed which was a mistake since Mediabuilder won't take the audio stream unless it's in the AVI) but it loses it's functions when converted to an AVI file.

I found out why it took three hours to encode the file with DivX Author (or TDA). It appended three copies of the same video into the container to create a three hour movie. At least Mediabuilder only created a 52 minute clip.

When I backup DVDs to DVD-R I never keep the menus for quality sake since the extras take up valuable disc space so I guess I don't need menus in DivX files but since you can't put a DivX file over 2GB on a DVD-R and it play in a standalone DivX player, it would be nice to add some extras so you're not wasting over 2GB of disc space.

I think it's 4GB, at least that's what TMPGEnc DVD Author allows. My Philips DVP-5982/37 has no trouble playing them.

I guess you're right. I knew my Philips 642 and 5140 wouldn't play my football discs that were over 4GB but I thought I had some 2GB files before that wouldn't play either. It must've been something else. Maybe over 2000 kbps bitrate in the 642.

The test disc that I burned for the 5140 was 2.61GB at 3427kbps and looked awesome on the 37" TV. A lot better than a 700MB CD at 900kbps.

One problem with the disc was the audio but that was because DivX Author encoded the 6 channel AC3 to stereo MP3. The whole idea of using this piece of crap software was to have a DivX Ultra compatible file with AC3 audio.

I would've been better off saving a wave file with Virtualdub 1.8.0 in Direct Stream Copy mode, renaming the wave to AC3, Compressing the video to DivX 6.8 without audio, opening the DivX file in Virtualdub, using the AC3 plugin to get the AC3 audio back into Virtualdub and Direct Stream Copying both the audio and the video.

I would've ended up with a better end result than either DivX Author or TDA Author. DivX Mediabuilder gave me the same result that Virtualdub did but only because I did most of the work with Virtualdub. Still my editor of choice.

How much time did you spent with divxmediabuilder? 20 minutes?????????

i know my native language is not english but i think i was pretty clear on what i meant

1- extract all menus, chapter menus etc and convert them to divx

2- extract movie and convert to divx

3- put everything together with divxmediabuilder, load menu avi and set it up like on a normal dvd authoring program.

    READ the divxmediabuilder TUTORIAL.

you are probably using avi files with qpel or gmc and those files are not compatible with the divx ultra format, you need to convert all files(menus, movies, extras) to divx home theather profile.

i use avi.Net as everything that it output is 100% compatible

if youre using "downloaded " mov(cough!) most of them use gmc/qpel so its a no go.

if you keep that in mind it works everytime, after you spend some time learning the program
