Generally, I do not have problem with SD DVD ripped into VOB/IFO using DVDFab Decrypter 4.

However, sometimes I notice that a file VIDEO_TS.VOB is NOT ripped. This phenomenon so far happens with DVDFab Decrypter 4, but if I use the old DVD Decrypter it will rip every file.

Do I need the file VIDEO_TS.VOB to ensure proper DVD play, which appears to be the 1st vob file to be read? If so, why I have several others that can play without it?

I have just found out on the disc of Appleseed Ex Machina, there is no VIDEO_TS.VOB

    Please enlighten. Tks.

I believe the Video_TS.VOB holds the VMG (top level) menu. If you do a movie only rip then you may not get one of these, as it is essentially unnecessary. Also, some discs have a dummy VMG menu that does little more than simply pass through to the main titleset menu for the first titleset, which again makes it unnecessary.

I gues the simple test is : does the disc play back from your HDD ? If so, the video_ts.vob was not required.

DVD's top menu can reside either in video manager menu file (VIDEO_TS.VOB), or in one of the VTS's (as a part of VTS_0x_0.VOB). In the second case VIDEO_TS.VOB file can be very small (dummy video blocks) or even absent (then video manager PGC's only contain navigation pre-commands stored in ifo's).

    Tks.

So far, I dun have problem playing these ripped DVD on my PC, with or without the file VIDEO_TS.VOB (in fact I only got to know the missing file only yesterday while I am trying to troubleshoot a ripped DVD movie.)

To be more specific, I am trying to troubleshoot a problem I experience on a media player, where I play ripped SD DVD from an ext HDD. Almost all ripped DVDs could be played (with or without the file VIDEO_TS.vob). There is only a problem with DieHard4, which fails to play after the 'message'. And Pirates Carribearn3 cant play via English Menu; need to select Chinese Menu. I will verify later at home whether these 2 ripped DVDs are missing the file, which I would have thought it is causing the problem.

This phenomenon of missing file is only when using DVD Fab Decrypter 4. I dun understand why it excludes VIDEO_TS.vob during ripping.

But the old DVD Decrypter rips every file.

Following on, as mentoned, I just check my friend's Appleseed Ex Machina DVD Disc, and the file VIDEO_TS.VOB is not originally included in the disc (STRANGE, cos I have seen the file in all DVD discs so far). So I am now inclined to think it is a non-essential file, which means it is NOT relevant to the problem I have with that 2 ripped DVDs.
