I just installed safari 3.1 on a Windows XP SP2 and a SP1 computer, both of them won't able to read Yahoo mail or Gmail.
Got "Safari can’t open the page “https://login.yahoo.com/config/mail?.intl=us”. The error was: “unknown error” (kCFErrorDomainWinSock:10053) Please choose Report Bugs to Apple from the Help menu, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message."
What's up ? Safari can't do it or it won't do it ? How do we get around this ?
Note : Safari 3.1 does tab much better and runs about 2 to 3 times faster than IE.

Gmail has always had issues with Safari from what I understand. It's an Ajax system that is basically a mismash of code to support several different browsers instead of being truly cross-browser friendly. Safari is one browser they've never had good support for.
I've seen similar reports of the new Yahoo Mail Beta having no end of issues in Safari, even though it's flash based. Basically you probably need use a different browser until the respective companies make their products more compatible with Safari.
Of course, that all being said there are a like number of complaints that the real issues is with the way Safari is encoded. I don't know enough about the guts of the software to say for sure which is at fault, but since I've never liked Apple all that much and I've never had much of a problem with either client in any other browser I'd probably agree that it's more a problem with Safari than anything else. -
FYI...If you use iTunes on Windows you may unknowingly install Safari with the latest update !

Another reason to switch from iTunes ? -
If you want good speed and great tabbing, use Firefox with TabMix Plus. Far superior to Safari, especially under windows. Apple software only really works well on OS X. They have never been able to write stable software for other platforms.
It was also interesting to note just how many security holes were discovered in Safari once it was released on the windows platform. These were pre-existing security holes from the Apple version, however no-one had cared enough to go looking when less than 4.5% of the world used it.
Switch to Firefox.Read my blog here.

Do you have a link to the stats by chance that show security comparisons between these browsers? Safari seems to be difficult to find info on.

I have found it difficult to find anything truly impartial or empirical that involves Apple products in the past. Propaganda is easy to find, but real facts or any detail is scarce. And blogs etc that have dissented or leaked in the past have often been bullied or closed down.
If you believe Apple products to be what Apple say they are then you need no other information, because they must be good, and that is enough.
If you don't believe Apple products to be what Apple say they are, but use them anyway (for whatever reason - hell, I now have an iPod classic), then you just have to accept them for what they are, faults (many of them) and all.Read my blog here.
