Is there a relatively quick and easy way to convert 30fps AVI mp4/mjpeg video to 29.97fps while also keeping the correct audio sync and pitch (ie compressing audio as well) ?

The reason I need to do this is because my wife and I have video shot on two different cameras (Casio EX-V7 and the Panasonic Lumix 12megapixel one) which I would like to cut into one movie. Both cameras record to quicktime which I have successfully converted to AVI with MP4Cam2AVI, but if I don't convert one of the files to the frame rate of the other, Pinnacle Studio (my editing program) will b0rk at me when I ask it to make a movie.

  2. Throw away one frame out of every 1001. Most editors will do this when asked to convert 30 fps to 29.97 fps.

Load your video in VirtualDub, and go to Frame Rate Options (CTRL-R), and put "change frame rate" to 29.97

This will change the frame rate from 30 to 29.97 without losing any frames. So the resulting video stream will be slightly longer. But not by much. The Audio stream will be out of synch. To fix it, use Besweet / BeSweet Gui to convert the audio by using the "Change Frame Rate" option with 30000 to 29970 (uncheck any presets, to enable this option). Make sure you use WAV output.

Then multiplex your new audio with the video stream by input selecting WAV input in virtualdub. You can then recompress the Audio stream as desired by going to audio compression options.

By keeping the video on Direct Stream Copy, it will not get recompressed, so there will be no loss of video quality, although, the audio will have suffered a little bit from the conversion and recompression. Not that I've ever heard the difference

You probably want to do the audio step first, then use VirtualDub to do the rest.
