If one were to compare a Yamaha S-661 to a Phillips DVP5960 or Pioneer DV-400, what would the major differences be? What makes the yamaha more expensive? I am looking for a high quality unit that will do divx off a usb disk. Also, what benefits will I get from using an yamaha player along with an yamaha receiver?

Higher cost does not always mean higher quality.

I'd make this thread , read the user reviews in the dvd player section, take some sample files with you to which ever store happens to have the models you're interested in, in stock. There's a couple of lengthly threads on the Philips model. https://forum.videohelp.com/topic301465.html?highlight=dvp5960 That one's 22 pages long!!!

If you were only interested in DVD video, I'd say go with the Yamaha. Going with a known, some what higher end, name brand, you get quality (usually). Not saying Pioneer isn't great quality, but Yamaha is considered better than plain Pioneer. Pioneer Elite is a different story. The only thing you'd gain by teaming a Yamaha DVD player with a Yamaha reciever is unity in names. Make sure you get some Yamaha speakers as well. <Serious on that. I own a set of the 10" monitor's, great speakers. Almost compare to my own custom built Morel units>

My opinion - Lean more towards the Pioneer or Yamaha.
