I was wondering if anyone out there would know if .VOBs would be smaller once run through a .MPG converter? I know that in the image world a .BMP is usually larger than a .JPEG and a flat .GIF usually is the smallest (with some lossy happening), but I don't know it for the video world. So, which file types yeild the smaller files? I looked on Google but only found the information for images and audio. In the audio world, .MP3s are usually smaller than .WMAs and .OGGs are usually the smallest (by far with lossless). Will conversion from .VOB to .MPG produce a smaller file? What about conversion from .VOB\.MPG to .AVI? Also in the audio world, the lower the byte rate the smaller the file. A lot of times it really isn't extremely noticeable between a 128 byte file and anything higher. Does this hold true in the video world as well?

A VOB file is just a container used by DVDs to store video, audio and sub-picture data. The video is already in the mpeg format inside this container. You can use a program like VOB2MPG to get an mpg file out of a VOB, and it will be slightly smaller (but not much, unless you have a lot of audio tracks you don't need).
Running a VOB through "an mpg converter" will probably reduce the quality because of the re-encoding, and if a lower bitrate is used, produce a smaller file. However if a smaller file is what you want, there are better methods and codecs to use than mpg.
I would suggest you look at AutoGK, which will convert your VOBs to Xvid encoded AVI files.Read my blog here.

Divx/Xvid is basically the video equivalent of MP3 in the audio field. If you are concerned about file size and want smaller files, converting to Xvid or Divx is the way to go. H.264/X.264 offer better quality, but they can't be played on DVD players and take more CPU power to encode and play. Divx and Xvid files can be played on DVD players that say that they support the format.
