When using Imgburn, how important is it to use the verify function while burning DVDs?
I've always used the verify feature, but I noticed it takes longer if you're burning a lot of dvds one at a time because I have a single burner. Is it a part of the burning process or does it just check for errors after burning a dvd?
In other words, will I be alright if I don't use that feature?
Another question:
I also tried using a burning program (not Imgburn) that came with my Liteon burner.
I am burning some Sony DVD-R 16x and the burner says it is burning them at 20x. I can't find anywhere to change the speed. (This isn't like Imgburn).
I watched the dvds and there is no problem, so is it alright to continue burning them at 20x? I also burned some TDK DVD-R 16x discs and the burner says it is burning them at 16x (the proper speed).
Thanks for your help! Ron

I would recommend ImgBurn over most all other DVD burning programs. JMO. Verify is more useful for data discs. Most programs like ImgBurn will tell you if there is an error during burning, so verify is mostly useless for video. JMO, also.
All verify does is confirm that the source data is the same as what's on the disc. Even if they fail verification, a DVD may still playback with no problems.
If you want to check the burned disc quality, then other programs would be more suitable. K-probe if you have a Lite-On drive or Nero CD-DVD Speed for most others. You don't usually need to check every disc, just each brand and with each burning program. This can also tell you if you are burning at the wrong speed for your data. I mostly use one speed slower than the disc specification. Or 12X for 16X speed discs. The TY discs I use burn perfect at 16X, so maybe not necessary, but it only takes a couple of minutes extra. -
The verify function compares the source files to the files that were burned. It takes as a long as it takes to read both and check that they are the same.
The right speed is the speed that works consistently. For some discs it will be the full rated speed. For others it may be less.Read my blog here.

I don't bother with the verify feature. I just play the DVD. If it plays at I assume it's OK. Never had a problem.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I won't use the verify feature in the future.
Now for my second question, which isn't really an Imgburn related.
Is it normal for my Liteon burner to say its burning a disc at 20x when the disc is 16x? If i receive no error alert while burning and the disc plays fine, will I be okay or will I experience problems with the disc in the future? -
some dvd media can be burned at 20x speed although the disc is rated at 16x speed depending on the model of dvd burner.
some dvd players may or may not be able to play those discs burned at faster speeds. i would say it depends on the dvd players you're using to play them back. -
Okay, thanks!
I just burned a disc using Imgburn, and I noticed that it is also giving me the option to burn my Sony DVD-R at 18x or 20x even though the disc is only 16x.
But when I burn a disc with 16x TDK DVD-R it will not give me the option to burn at 18x or 20x. -
