  1. Techarp is hosting a new HD x264 benchmark. Have a look and run it on your system to help populate the data table.

Basically, you run the test encode of an HD sample (1280x720) and it will report back frames-per-second values for your machine @ it's clock/overclock level. You can run it at your stock settings and at your overclock settings to see how your machine compares to others in the database.

My goal is to have a representative set of data for many different chips and chipsets. Please just report your results here in this thread. I will keep the data at that url to keep things simple.

    Thanks all and enjoy!

The following image will be updated automatically as new data comes in. It doesn't display any results, but it does show the number of data points collected so far and how they break down by CPU type:

Seems I have the wimpy rigs compared to those above me, haha. I'm a bit surprised to see the extra 1.4GHz on my overclocked D805 did not yield a larger difference. Glad to see the info on the Q6600 because that is what I was thinking my next OC'able upgrade might be.

    Cheers,
    Rick

Get a GIGABYTE P35 mobo for your Core 2 Quad cpu.

  14. @RickA - Thanks for taking the time to bench those systems! First off, I've seen how the Pentium D's overclock doesn't scale before and I can't explain it either

A few questions so I can add your results:

Does the Pentium D system use DDR, SDRAM, or DDR2 memory?
What codename does your Athlon X2 3500+ have? There are three possibilities CPU-Z should tell you which one you have. Also, what speed is the memory on that system, and is it DDR or DDR2?

    Thanks man!

Thanks all for your input, greatly appreciated. I'm sporting a BFG 680i SLI mobo with the P4 D805 and finding it the friendliest OC board I have used yet. It is also the first one (and rig) that I seriously looked in to with OC'ing in mind. Still much to learn. If you have more OC advice (prefered CPU's, mobo's, etc) I would like to hear it, please feel free to PM.

Graysky - my apologies, I ment to post the extra info you asked for. The D805 has DDR2. The AMD has DDR and is not overclocked, codename Venice, memspeed 200MHz 1:1 FSBRAM. It is not an X2 (dual core-?), just a normal Athlon 64. My P4 is the only dual core I have. If there is any way I can help out more with the testing please say.

Here is another test run with the D805 with FSB at 533MHz (2.6GHz stock) and Mem (PC2-6400)
at 800 MHz. Not much of a change between the 533MHz mem clock.

Yes, DRAM Frequency = 400.9Hhz to be exact.

I know. It's not mine, it's the fastest computer at work. If I added my home computer to this test, the result would be in frames per day (fpd)

That AMD Phenom proc that redwudz is using seems to be very fast for the money. It's up there with the Q6600 in fps encoding speed, but it's $70 cheaper that the Q6600 on NewEgg. That MacPro at work is a screamer, but the cost/performance ratio is nowhere near the other machines posted above. It's around 2.5x faster than a nice Q6600 system, but it's 4.5x the price.

  29. @Soopa - yep, it seems like you'll always pay a major premium for that last 5-10 % on the price/performance curve

If I could find a motherboard for my Socket 478 3.2 Pentium 4 I'd run a test for it.
