Does anyone know if there exists such a device that can remotely – that is, away from its’ subject, or even through a wall – detect a person’s vital signs, such as heart rate, breathing rate, and alertness? By alertness, I mean it can tell how awake or asleep a person is. I know the military was working on something like this a while back, but I'm wondering if it ever developed any further, or if some other field picked up on it.

Although I believe the company that made them went out of business.
But, to my knowledge, the Medical Tricorder has yet to be developed, but it's getting closer...

Some indian gurus claim to know everything of someone just by looking at them. You could try try using a heat signature viewer, and then process this information through a supercomputer such as Multivac, to find out the rest of the puzzle.
