I have several avi's on my pc. Whenever I click directly on an avi in Windows explorer I get the error messages as indicated in the images attached.

I can only play them IF I launch VLC and open them through there.

My codecs are kept up to date as are my patches/updates, etc.

Can anyone offer advice or a solution to make this crazy behaviour stop?

    Thank you.

  2. Most likely the xvid codec is crashing when Windows Explorer uses it to get a thumbnail image.

It's quite common when the codec contains a bug that causes it to tell Explorer that it can do something that it can't.

Have you checked to see if there is a more recent version of the codec?

I have in the past but not in the past couple of months. I'll do that now. I wonder if I should just overwrite it or rename the old dll first....

Thanks Johnny ... I appreciate your input.

  4. Just in case, rename the existing one before putting a new one in the same location.

Great. That would be my choice too. I'll let you know how it turns out.

    Thanks again
