Apparently you didn't read what I wrote. It's not "reviews", it's users of the product who might be able to offer some help, or have reported this as a problem and maybe had a fix or work-around.

    Sorry I tried to help.

Probably not, since most of them would have more sense than to buy this particular player for a TV set it's not designed for. One reason it's so expensive, and the reason it got the first ever perfect score from the Secrets Of Home Theater people, is because of that Anchor Bay chipset ... which sovkiller can't use.
Let me tell you something the only reason I got this player was to play other regions movies, and PAL movies, , and trasnfer the 980 to the bedroom, but to play standard movies in NTSC region 1, I have other two options, that at least do not have any issue to correct later on with a firmware upgrade...Also do not forget that to score 100 does not mean that is perfect, read the ratings they use, and the tests they use, that while demanding, there are others that this player probably do not pass so succesfully...it is a good player, I'm not complaining about that performance, I'm complaining about the problems it has, the defects, and the lack of diligence while conducting a business, they are acting like microsoft, using the customers to find the bugs and fix them later on...

Not sure what you mean with the sense part, but IMO any player in the market that you release now should support all available formats, otherwise that is shortcoming, not a feature to be proud of, they never stated in any place that is meant or could be used only with LCD or plasma TV players in 1080 high definition mode, it even includes 480 low definition modes, that must work, otherwise simply remove them from the player...
Any VCR has the aspect ratio feature that works, a technology from the last century, that is very common feature in any player, and those guys simply were not able to implement it properly since the frist day, so I do not think that your coment was very applicable here, if anybody lack of sense is IMO OPPO while releasing a defective player...

Jim I really appreciate the link, and I will read it, the first page was a review so i stopped reading any further, but also do not forget that I talked personally with the Oppo guys on the phone, and they know of the problem and they do not have any solution right now to it, I od not think that those advanced user if Oppo do not have any, will ahve any update to offer...but anyway thanks for the link, good reading anyway...

And as I told you guys, I liked it, and I od nto hesitate toget it again as soon as they fix those little bugs, but like that, it has a problem that is not bearable for me, for others it will be fine to see any person with the two feet face long, for me is not...sorry...

You have a display with only component video inputs? Oppo themselves recommends the 980 for that type of connection:
    http://oppodigital.com/dv980h/dv980h_comp.asp

They also clearly mention that the Anchor Bay technologies in the player are NOT implemented for component outputs:
    http://oppodigital.com/dv983h/dv983h_features.asp

And no current player available for retail sale will upconvert copy-protected content via component outputs - also mentioned above.

The player is not "defective", it's just not suited for your display.

Jimmy the player according to them, to the OPPO tehcnicians, not me (that was the reason I decided to return it)has known issues in the aspect ratio...the first reaction while I asked the technician, was, to call another expert, hey (and call another guy) do you know if the 983 has any issue with the aspect ratio? And the answer from the other guy was: YES, it has some problems, it should work, and is not working properly, we know that...

They do not have any answer yet for the problem, but they agree there is a probelm, please, I'm not stupid, do not try to cover the sun with a finger, there is a defect on the firmaware of the player, while you set the aspect ratio to letter box, it should place the two black bars if the movie requires that, right now what it does, is streching the image, you set it to pan-scan and does absolutelly the same, it can not be the same in both settings, the aspect ratio feature is not working at all....that is a problem, and they know about it, they are working to fix it, it is not a matter of being apropriate or not, there is a problem, and the new firmware release according to them will be in the next 7 weeks...
