Ok I gave up on virtual pc 2007 and checked out virtualbox. Works great. I got freedos installed on it no problem and even was able to install windows 98 on my VISTA pc without dualbooting.

HOWEVER I can't figure out how to get my cd drive to read inside the virtual machine. I understand the mounting as that is how I got it installed. But I can't seem to make the cd drive appear in the my computer in the windows 98 screen. My questions are:

    1. How do I get the cd/dvd drive to be recognized inside the windows 98 virtual machine?

    2. How do I get my nvidia 8400 to play directx games in windows 98?

    3. How do I get shared folder access in the virtual machine so I don't have to do iso stuff or burn cds?

4 - not critical but how could I get internet access inside the windows 98 virtual machine?

    5. How do I get sound to work in the virtual machine?

Thanks for any advice. I think I am just missing something simple but since this is my first time working with virtual machines of thic complexity I'm flying blind (well I did fool around with doxbox but that wasn't much - I have now installed windows on a virtual machine and that is much more complex).

ALso I do know there are guest additions for the virtualbox but I don't know how to install those or where to get specific drivers for them. Thanks.

EDIT - I read the user guide and there isn't guest addition support for win98. I think I will try and install win2000 and see how it goes. I think 2000 had more backward compatibility with my lucasarts games then xp or vista has. This was a learning experience at least. I will keep my iwn98 setup since I actually got it working.

EDIT 2 - Well my win2000 installlation went smoothly. Once it finished I had cd drive acces! I can even use the interent through it! Wow this is pretty versital. I know have win2000 on a dual core amd My only two things now are to get sound and graphics working. I can actulaly do1024x768 res but I need to get 3d driver support.
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

  2. Win98 didn't come with drivers for CD/DVD and NIC. You need to find DOS drivers for the CD (generic ones should work) and add MSCDEX to the AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS. I don't remember of you need DOS or Win98 drivers for the NIC.

    Thanks jagabo.

Actually I'm temporarily abandoning win98 and going with win2000. The integration is better. THough I'm still on the hunt for sound and graphics drivers for virtualbox.

I don't know how well those old games will run on W2K. I play a few of old DOS games using DosBox.
