before i research this issue i would like to know if its even possible.ok,lets say you go vhs to dvd with a combo machine.you rip the video content of the dvd to the hard drive in whatever form.now youve got a copy of the video from a vcr on your comp.is there any way to restore or clean up the video from that point?

If this is just hypothetical, you will have problems with a commercial VHS tape using a combo VHS>DVD machine. It will likely not copy the tape because of Macrovision encryption.

With a tape without Macrovision, yes, you should be able to copy it. VirtualDub is a good program, but your DVD video will be in MPEG format. You can extract it to a single MPEG file with VOB2MPG. The newest VD or VD Mod will accept MPEG, but only output AVI type formats. So, after filtering. you will have to convert it back to MPEG format if you wanted a DVD format for the final version. The more conversions you do, the more quality losses. Something to consider.

Any time you filter, you will have to re-encode. With VD or VDM, you could frameserve the filtered video directly to a MPEG encoder and avoid some losses. At least simpler than creating a in-between file. Look to: https://www.videohelp.com/virtualdubframeserve.htm

VirtualDub has a lot of filters available. Some here: http://www.thedeemon.com/VirtualDubFilters/

I know, a lot to consider.

yea the overdub syndrome carries over, sad.what what ive seen so far the filters may "improve" the picture but only slightly or to a certain point.the quality is still dependent on the vhs sorce.your not going to convert old vhs to dvd quality but you can smooth it out a little.

i hope im right about this before i settle on doing without really knowing.i spent about 10hrs experimenting with different filters and settings.and so far i can only see subtle improvements in the overall picture quality.going from vhs to dvd is a big project and i would like to do it right.can anyone confirm the facts?can virtualdub convert vhs footage to dvd quality or is it more in taking out the flaws and such? 8)

    Depends on source quality.

    Depends on original VHS player.
