MOV to Uncompressed AVI

A client has asked that we supply a short movie (5mins) we had produced last year in "AVI format, as Microsoft DV Codec or Uncompressed". We have this on DVD as a 1GB .mov file, and unfortunately are unable to access the original files from which the .mov file was created.

Is there any quality benefit (or other reason) for me creating an uncompressed AVI file from the mov file? If so, is there any online freeware which you could recommend.

Virtualdubmpeg can produce an uncompressed AVI file for you. With the right codec installed it can also output DV if you want.

the quality benefit is that they want it in the highest quality
either to (1) make their own edits and DVDs off of, or (2)
to have it in the highest quality so they can make their own
lower formatted files from it, such as .flv for the web,
3gpp for cell phones, mp4 for iTunes delivery, etc.

taking it from .mov, depending on the codecs you used to
save it into that format, there will be a quality hit they
may not be happy with.

IF you created this in Final Cut Pro, it would be easy to go back and
create an .avi file that is DV-NTSC, as the CODEC for the file,
which will give them the huge file they require.

If all your stuck with is the final output .mov file, you could try and
open it in Quicktime Pro, and and re-export it as an .avi file
with either None as the Compression Codec, or DV/DVCPro NTSC,
but you may notice some quality hit as it tries to "scale" the file
from what it is encoded in to another codec.

Think it was. I was about to suggest all sorts of free programs and then I spotted the fact that it was posted to the mac forum (kinda could explain the lack of replies)

Back to topic. Does Quicktime Pro or Final Cut have a 'free' version ?

Methinks you will struggle to find free software for a mac.

neither are free.
But QT Pro would cost less
( $29 plus $20 for QT Mpeg-2 Component=$50, but free if you had bought FCP)
than FCP.

Maybe MPEG Streamclip?

Free version QT can't save and/or recompress (required update (pay) to QT Pro).
But freeware MPEG Streamclip editor use (and require) QT; can edit MOV files; can use QT codecs (include installed addons, example AVID or 3ivX codecs); can save to AVI...

...but to do Mpeg-2 editing still requires the QT Mpeg-2 component
which is $20 US. So MpegStreamclip isn't free, but cripple ware.

He he... well, i'm not use MPEG Streamclip for MPEG-2 - only for QT.

MPEG Streamclip just use QT and installed addons.
BTW... 3ivX it's not freeware too and MPEG Streamclip can use this codec - just because 3ivX have addon for QT.

Better (i'm think) for MPEG-2 just use Avidemux (Linux, Windows, Mac OS X).

But... Avidemux can open .mov files (not all QT codecs supported) and save to AVI (example used DV, Huffyuv, YV12, MJPEG, ...).
