    ive made a post before about this topic but the issue is not resolved.vro files was the result of using vr mode to record video to dvd as you can edit the dvd on the machine in vr mode.on a dvd/combo unit.the unit would no longer load the discs and,in haste had thrown the vhs tapes away.in transition i only scratched the surface of my vhs collection.having learned the basics of what you can and cant do with video,i no longer record in vr mode.transferring vhs to dvd with a combo unit,dvd to pc,edit,back to dvd seems to work for me.im still stuck with a few dvds recorded in vr mode=vro files.basically roxio creator basic v9 is the only (free)program that will copy the dvds (vr mode).but now im stuck with global sonic image files(.gi).the funny thing is i can import all but the first big .gi and the first couple of small.gi to windows movie maker.burning the contents of the copy to dvd renders a dvd that will not play in a stand alone player.ok,fine,thats as far as i got.i can use wmm to import and publish as a wmv then try burning that to disc or just use the dvd maker.but i cant import that first big file(the first hour of the dvd).i can import using mpeg streamclip to import the .gi but it will not convert the entire file.virtual dub cannot import.if i could just convert the .gi to mpg,wmv,avi i could at least import it to wmm and start the long process.its sad but .gi does not seem to register much as i Google till im blue in the face without and solid resolve.im sure there are programs that can convert .gi files but i need one thats free.perhaps there is a technique to workaround this.thanks for any help or advice in advance.

    wmm does come up with this error:The file C:\Users\Videos\Image_080304_1821.gi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.
    but good luck finding the codec

    .gi files are global images or also known as .iso files. if there is only one you should be able to just rename it file.gi to file.iso if it's a multipart image then search for an old program called "split gi2iso.exe" to put it back together.

    .iso is a disc image. you might try using something like isobuster to open the image and extract whatever is inside. the files with numbers are the iso's. the files without are a type of .cue file with instructions for recordnow to put the pieces back together.

    split gi2iso's nfo -

    First I want to explain why PrimoDVD and RecordMAX Now Split Their DVD
    Images.

    It’s quite a good idea when you know why PrimoDVD and RecordMAX Now
    Split the image. It’s all down to your OS File Allocation Table.
    Back in the day when PrimoDVD was first released the main OS around
    Was Windows 98. Win98 used a File Allocation Table called FAT32 the
    Problem with FAT32 is it can not support a file larger than 2GB so to
    Get round this problem PrimoDVD and RecordMAX Now splits the DVD
    Image every 2GB

    EXAMPLE
    ~~~~~~~
    I Will Explain How PrimoDVD or RecordMAX Now uses the Split GI Files
    To Burn the DVD.
    I have just made a Backup PS2 DVD Image of Grand Theft Auto Vice City
    4.4GB DVD. I am now looking at the Split GI Files that PrimoDVD or
    RecordMAX Now have made on my hard drive.
    Split GI Files Explanation
    GTAVC.gi <--- Act’s As a Cue Sheet to Tell PrimoDVD or
    RecordMAX Now what kind of image the
    DVD is. It also tells PrimoDVD or Record
    Now MAX what Sequence to burn the Split
    GI Files in.
    GTAVC (11).gi <--- First Part of the main DVD Image.
    GTAVC (12).gi <--- Second Part of the main DVD Image.
    GTAVC (13).gi <--- Third Part of the main DVD Image.
    As you can see if you have ever used a program like CDRWin the file
    GTAVC.gi is like a cue sheet telling PrimoDVD or RecordMAX Now
    Information that is needed to burn the DVD Image.
    **********************
    * USING Split GI2ISO *
    **********************
    Using Split GI2ISO is simple as long as you have an OS that can
    Supports a NTFS Partition for files larger than 2GB (Windows XP or NT)
    You shouldn’t have a problem.
    All you have to do is add the main Split GI Files in Sequence in to
    The Program using the add button.
    To Find the Sequence look at the main Split GI Image Files
    (Numbered Part)
    *.gi
    *(11).gi
    *(12).gi
    *(13).gi
    As you can see you don’t have to be a brain surgeon to work out what
    Sequence to add the Main DVD image files in. the Split GI File
    (CUE FILE) left over can be discarded because it is only used by
    PrimoDVD or RecordMAX Now to Get this Sequence.
    REMEMBER DO NOT ADD THE SPLIT GI CUE FILE TO THE PROGRAM YOU WILL
    END UP WITH A BAD ISO
    PrimoDVD or RecordMAX Now will always name the main DVD image Files
    In A numbered sequence add the lowest file first until the highest
    Numbered file is the last one. I.E. 01 to 10 EASY
    When you have finished adding the main DVD Image files Press Join and
    Save the ISO file.
    It takes about 5 to 10 minutes to convert to an ISO file Depending on
    You system specs
    Once the program has finished creating the ISO you can burn the ISO
    File using Nero Burning ROM or any other Burning Software that
    Supports your DVD Burner and ISO Format.
    **********************
    * About Split GI2ISO *
    Split GI2ISO Is a tool that can join and convert PrimoDVD and
    RecordMAX Now (Split DVD GI Files) To ISO ( Simple As That.. )
    You could also try using ISOBuster on the original DVD's to pull all of the data files from the discs, then use a different tool to perform the conversion.
