Hello everyone. This is my first time here, so hopefully i'm not beating a dead horse with this question. I downloaded mac the ripper for my new macbook (I am used to using dvd shrink for PC)..neways, I got a hold of Into The Wild which was a great movie by the way..neways, I figured i'd try to backing it up...I did the "extract main feature only" and the file is over 7 gigs...shouldn't the program compress the movie to fit on one dvd? Since this is my first time using it, I was wondering if anyone knows what I am doing wrong...or if anyone can give me some advice since I am new to Mac..

MTR doesn't do shrinking, it just rips.
To make your VIDEO_TS folder smaller,
    you'll need a different app,
    like Toast, Popcorn, DVD2OneX, etc.

That's why it isn't called MacTheShrinker. It does only what its name suggests -- it rips. Period.

In anticipation of your next question, there are no freeware GUI shrink tools on the Mac. Ffmpegx (shareware) does have a barebones shrink tool, and costs the least of anything out there.

    hmm...ok...

Case, you said toast shrinks the video ts file? I just got toast 8 titanium. I dragged the file into toast, tried to burn it, and once the disc was full THEN it told me it wouldn't be sufficient...but prior to burning it, it said the disc capacity wasn't full...so how do I shrink with toast?

Set Toast to Video > VIDEO_TS folder. Drag your VIDEO_TS folder to the window. Set the 'Fit-to-DVD video compression' checkbox.

If you look to the left of this page, you'll see a whole bunch of useful links. If you click on "what is DVD," you'll be led to a page that tells you a great deal about the structure of the files on a DVD. The short answer is yes, the video_ts folder is the one that contains "everything" related to the movie proper.

    cool..i'll check it out..

case..you said something about just using mac the ripper to rip it and toast to burn and shrink....i did that..it worked on one dvd, and not the other...get it to to work with the "other" dvd, I ripped with mac the ripper, shrunk with dvd2one and then burned with toast...that worked...i read somewhere that you have to do it that way...rap with mac the ripper, shrink with dvd2one, and then burn with toast...is this true? It seemed to be for that one dvd I did the other day..i kept getting errors when i tried shrinking and burning with toast..

Stealth, I haven't had to use DTOX (DVD2OneX) in a long time. Are
you perhaps using that semi-obsolete version 2.6.6 MTR? The latest,
version 3.0r14m, pretty much handles anything you throw at it.

Go to ripdiferrent.com, join the forums, and read thoroughly how to
    go about getting the latest.

one thing i'm noticing....if I simply rip the movie with mac the ripper and drag it into toast, it says there's usually a 50 percent reduction in quality...but when I use mac the ripper, then dvd2one, then drop it into toast, it says the quality has only been reduced by 5 to 10 percent...is that accurate?

Not accurate. DTOX has already scrunched the movie, so Toast
doesn't have to. Toast is reducing DTOX's output quality by 5-10%,
    not the movie's quality.

that's what i thought..thanks for clearing that up..i was wondering if that was how it worked...cool...

so do I really even need DTOX for anything or should I scrap it? does it come in handy under certain circumstances?

Some folk think DTOX's compression algorithm is superior to
the one in Toast (or Popcorn). I mostly use DTOX to strip out
the main feature of a ripped DVD if I decide after it has been
ripped (MTR can do it, too) that the extras are mere puffery.

I think DVD2OneX (DTOX) does a better job of compressing than Toast. It's 3 steps instead of 2 (MacTheRipper rip/ DTOX compress/ Toast burn) but the results are better so I think it's worth the trouble. I get a lot of macroblocks with Toast's compression.

I also like DTOX for joining mulitple titles (or chapters) for burning using Toast's Video Mode. You can also burn from DTOX but I don't think it makes any menus.

So yes DTOX comes in handy all the time.

cool...also, what is the difference between toast and popcorn? popcorn is primarily a dvd burning program right? where toast does it all?

Yes Popcorn does some of what Toast does, although Popcorn 3 has a feature or 2 not in Toast 8. I understand those features will be included in Toast 9 which is coming out on April 1st (no fooling ).
