  1. Hi, yes I'm a newbie too, but I was hoping people could help me on this.

I had winME and was capping just fine using a Pinnacle Studio PCTV card up until yesterday (when I installed XP). However, after installation, I've noticed two things that are not so hot. One is that the input image for my caps now has some extra artifacts (a somewhat large black bar) on the left and right side of the screen. I never had this phenomena in my winME days, so I'm guessing it's some compatibility between the card and XP. While this is annoying, I can still correct this with Vdub's cropping feature.

What I cannot correct is the massive loss of frames when capping. Again, when using ME, this never was an issue. I've checked over everything, including getting rid of background tasks, DMA, etc., and somehow I still have a massive loss of frames (20% loss) even at 320x240 resolution. Worse yet, sometimes Vdub just freezes after a while, and I can't do anything except reset.

I may also want to add that the sound is also capped in a terrible fashion... after maybe 7 seconds of jittered sound, there's just no longer any sound captured at all.

Again, I'm using Studio PCTV card, 1 Ghz AMD Athlon, 240 MB ram, 40 Gig 7200 FAT32 drive + 80 gig 7200 ntfs drive.

Can anyone help me with any possible hints or solutions? Thank you very much for your time.

  2. I'm not really an expert but I have the same set up as you as far as the card and OS goes, and capturing is not a problem. Perhaps this is a silly question, but did you download the win XP driver from Pinnacle's website?

BTW, how did you enable DMA? I was told XP didn't use it, and I'm damned if I can find it

  3. Hah, you're a lifesaver, I only checked Pinnacle's website very briskly and did not bother to find any XP drivers.

To enable DMA (though in almost all cases, I'm sure it's enabled already), right click on My Computer -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers -> double click on your primary channel (or secondary in some cases).

It'll bring up another window where you can choose the driver tab and select DMA or PIO

Thanks again... I best download that driver now.
