How many types of DVD writers interface out there now beside the below?

    SATA serial ATA
    PATA parallel ATA

Are new ones come with both that I can switch?

Or, how do find out what I have now (Sony- DW-U18A)

those are the 2 most prevalent ones. might find an occasional scsi or fibrechannel. also usb/firewire for external drives.

look at the cable that attaches to your drive to the motherboard. is it about 2 inches wide or about a half inch. ide is the first and sata the second type.

  3. Your drive (Sony- DW-U18A) is an EIDE drive. That's Parallel ATA.

An add-on identified on the linked page as either "IDE to SATA" or "SATA to IDE" will allow for changing the interface. Also listed are USB to IDE and USB to SATA adapters. I've never used an IDE to SATA or SATA to IDE adapter, but I have used a USB to IDE cable many times whenever I need to temporarily add a another burner. Be sure to check for O/S compatibility.
