  1. Hi,

I'm trying to convert a VHS tape of a State Football game recorded from cable. I captured the video to PC using WindDV, and need help correcting the color. Looks like to much red.

I'm using VirtualDub, and I have ColorMill but don't know how to use it. I also have Red/Green/Blue Adjustment filter as well. I'm also planning on using NeatVideo to remove some of the noise, and the Filler filter to remove the noise at the bottom of the video. Other than that I can't see anything else wrong with this capture.

Any help on color correction would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Matt

  2. Try HSV Adjust. Turn the Saturation down a bit. Maybe to 75%.

The 'noise' at the bottom of the screen is not noise. Filling that part of the image with any other part of the image or even just solid colour is just a waste of time.

You could crop your image to get rid of it but if you intend to make a dvd out of this then the overscan of the tv will take care of it (you will not see it)

If I crop it, would that also make the video smaller? Are there other filter commands I need to use with the crop filter in virtualdub with this NTSC interlaced video? I never used the crop feature so I would like to do it correctly.

    Thanks.

If you are thinking of cropping it is time to use avisynth instead. Split the fields, crop the video, put them back, then add borders. Plenty of examples on how to do it. Far safer than virtualdub.

  7. There's no sense in leaving noise at the bottom of the screen to eat up bitrate. You can use the Fill filter in VirtualDub to mask the head switching noise with black. 8 lines of black at the bottom of the frame will cover it up and will consume hardly any bitrate.

Yes it does look like poor NTSC color.
In Photoshop 6.0, I used levels to adjust the neutral colors in the back ground
so that they actually look more neutral. Then desaturated the red channel a little.

Nothing a proc amp wouldn't fix in analog. That would have been best.

TMPGEnc Plus would be my tool of choice to adjust colors here, in software.
Advanced color corrections. Probably needs a stacked set of filters. It's really not that bad.
