  1. OK, this is soooo frustrating! I have no sound when I play media files - mps, mpeg videos, avi files. nothing. I I do have sound when I watch TV on my computer so i know the speakers work, etc. I checked the volume control in windows and all are "on" (no mute).

Any ideas? Seems this has happened before on another computer of mine but I can't recall the solution.

What video player are you using? WMP? Have you tried other players like VLC? Same problem?
Have you checked the hardware audio settings in the control panel?
If you are using ffdshow or some other audio decoder be sure to check the settings in those.

  4. tried those things, thanks though. I have several players, no success. I uninstalled audio car then re-installed it, no help. Must be some software problem somewhere. I use a wireless transmitter for sending music to my home stereo receiver - maybe that is mixed up in this somehow. I'm not sure how to check it though.

    Crap.

  5. Can you get audio files to play? like .mp3?

Do you hear beeps, browser clicks etc? (the reason I ask is some TV tuner cards have separate audio not rendered through the sound card, just trying to isolate the problem)

  6. OK, I solved the problem!!! First, i searched google for any possible registry issues which i recall having before. Then, I saw a codec checking program (part of klite or something)....ran that, didn't help. THEN I swore a bit, complained to my family and, as a last resort........

checked the plug int the back of the computer that had come lose.......

Very embarrasing. In my defense, I HAD plugged a different speaker set in earlier but it didn't work because the lose plug was from the audio out to the TV tuner card.

    Thanks for trying to help.
