    Hello everyone,

A few years ago i installed the x264 codec with an installer that I believe I found on free-codecs.com. I'm figuring I should be updating my codecs now and I'm puzzled about something.

I can't find an updated installer, just a new x264.exe (rev. 745 I believe). It's just an encoding command line util... The shortcut from the old installer that configures the codec by using windows/system32 rundll32 on the x264vfw.dll file. When using VirtualDub(Mod) it brings up the same config screen.

What brings me to the question is that I'm using another video converter (for my PSP) that brings up what appears to be a much more updated configuration screen for x264. I found an x264.exe among the software's directories, but no similarly named dll. I'm honestly not sure what it's loading to change it's config....

Okay, so with that history I can keep my question pretty short I suppose. How to I use the newer x264 with VirtualDub(Mod) and/or correctly update my x264 codec?

    Thanks a million,
    Sylus

  2. Virtualdub uses a VFW (video for windows) version of x264. It has fewer options that the CLI (command line interface) version that megui/automkv.

The better, CLI version cannot be used in Vdub or Vdubmod. If you need to do editing stuff from vdub, avidemux is an option that behaves like vdub, but uses the CLI version.

OOoh, I see. I've gotten so accustomed to using using virtualdubmod I stopped exploring other options awhile ago.

I'll try that out, thanks! As long as it can directly write subtitles with TextSub, VobSub or something like that I'll be fine.

  4. Are you talking about hardcoding subtitles?

Actually I don't know if you can do that with avidemux. The x264 VFW version isn't bad. For most uses, you won't be able to tell the difference.

Yes... and you're probably right. I'll stick with what I've got for now unless I run into any real apparent quality issues.
