    Hi folks,

I am new on this forum and I am coming with a problem. I bought a Philips DVP5980/12 and I tried to play some AVI files; the result was that the player is hanging up (not in the same point) after a few seconds (max 1 minute) and doesn't respond anymore; the only solution is to cut off the power. I tried with an old AVI file and worked but with my latest downloaded files doesn't want to work; is freezing

Do you have any idea why is freezing and what should I do? The firmware is the latest available on Philips website (DVP5980_12.bin).

I need your help; much appreciated!

    Thank you.

Some DivX/XviD AVI files have something called "packed bitstreams" and this can cause a problem with some DVD players such as the Philips model that you have but there is a solution for this problem ... if this is your problem.

There is a program for MS Windows called MPEG4Modifier. You open up the AVI file and check "unpack" and it will very quickly without any re-encoding create a new file that will NOT have "packed bitstreams".

It probably will be that simple but also bear in mind that there are other issues that could be causing bad playback so then again it might NOT be this easy.

But trying this is worth a try

Another thing to note ... the Philips cannot deal with files that have a resolution over 720x576 so 720p TV rips (which have a much higher resolution like 1280x544 or something like that) will not work at all without re-encoding and reducing the resolution. Could be this is also your problem.

Another MS Windows program worth downloading is GSpot. GSpot will give you details about the AVI file and this can help you find out what the resolution is among other aspects of the file.

    Hi Fulci,

    Thanks for your reply.

I have downloaded the MPEG4Modifier but I cannot start the program (error violation...).

The GSpot program says that the codec used is XviD ISO MPEG-4. Does this help?

Take a screenshot of GSpot and post it here.

Here is a link that explains how to do that: https://forum.videohelp.com/topic271697.html

Latest news: it seems that is works with DivX encoding; the XVID codec is the big problem; does anyone know what can I do to play AVI files encoded with XVID?

Some Xvid encoding will likely work also, the only way to know for sure is through trial and error. Since there isn't anything that you can do with the player to make it play the files, you have to make the files compatible with your player.

  8. Hi,

Divx subtitles on DVP5980K/78 are white or yelow? There are some config like font size?

    Thanks.

  9. DVP5982 won't play XVID ISO MPEG4 codec, re-encode avi is necessary

All the recent DVD models by Philips use a MediaTek chipset. This chipset will play XviD just fine as long as you don't use any "goofy" seeting like GMAC etc. and it is rare that XviD encoding use such "goofy" settings as the people in the "know" encode to be as close to DivX spec as possible in order to ensure DivX hardware compatibility.

If you can't get XviD playing on a modern Philips then you did something really wrong with the encoding.
